Luther saw Jolie.

Strangely enough, he should have felt guilty—after all, he had chosen her. Yet, in that moment, all he felt was a flash of irritation.

The three of them stared at each other for a long time, until Hilda finally shoved Luther away.

"The papers are signed. Let's not blur the lines anymore. I'll explain things to my mother, and you can handle your parents."

With that, Hilda walked straight out of the room.

She didn't spare Jolie a single glance.

She didn't look back at Luther either.

It was as if none of it concerned her anymore.

As if everything was nothing more than a passing cloud.

There were still two people left in the office, but it felt terrifyingly empty.

After a long pause, Luther straightened his clothes slightly and asked Jolie why she had come in. She hesitated before softly reminding him, "Luther, you chose me. We're going to get married."

"Not right now. I'm still a married man."

Jolie was furious on the inside, but she forced herself to swallow it. She wasn't Mrs. Sanford yet.

She dropped the subject of Hilda and switched gears. "That Bibliophile is so manipulative. She's completely piggybacking on your fame to hype up 'First Love'. I bet she's some completely average-looking woman. Why else would she only dare to admire you in secret? Luther, the thought of some middle-aged woman secretly obsessing over you gives me the creeps. She's so out of touch with reality. If it wasn't for the partnership with Naomi Zeller—I heard The Bibliophile is Naomi's benefactor—I would never go out of my way to praise such a plain, calculating woman."

The Bibliophile was Naomi's benefactor?

The Bibliophile was plain-looking?

Who on earth had fed Jolie this nonsense?

Even knowing the truth, Luther didn't have the energy to correct her.

Seeing how distracted and distant he looked, Jolie knew the truth.

He couldn't bear to let Hilda and her daughter go.

She wanted to say something, but ultimately didn't have the courage. All she could do was drink her frustrations away in the dead of night.

...

Seeing the shock on her face, the man chuckled.

His name was Damien Croix, an incredibly gifted mathematical genius.

But years ago, Jolie had successfully sued him for sexual harassment. He was sentenced to 200 days in prison. His entire life was destroyed.

He used to think she genuinely just didn't want to be intimate with him. But when he finally tracked her down to Alpha City, he learned the truth—she had dumped him because she had her eyes set on a wealthy heir. Word on the street was she was about to become Mrs. Sanford.

Damien harshly grabbed her chin. His voice was a low, dangerous rumble.

"I can't believe how easily you played me back then. I actually thought you were pure. I bet your current boyfriend has no idea about your colorful little history, does he?"

Jolie's face turned deathly pale.

She stared at him in terror. "What do you want?"

The next second, he grabbed a fistful of her hair.

Damien leaned in close, his hot breath hitting her face. "You'll find out in a minute."
