She wasn't an idiot. She knew Luther was only provoked into taking her with such desperation. There was no love in his actions, only an outlet for his raw emotions. But so what? The deed was done. Soon, she would become Mrs. Sanford.
She washed up, smelling sweet and fragrant.
She slipped into a sheer bathrobe.
Intent on seducing him again.
Luther was sitting out on the balcony with his shirt unbuttoned, smoking a cigarette.
The night breeze ruffled the stray hairs on his forehead.
The moonlight cast his handsome features in sharp relief.
Jolie's heart raced.
He always had this effect on her.
She walked over barefoot and pressed herself against his chest. She knew with Luther's stamina, they could easily go a couple more rounds. She wanted to do it on the balcony. Leaning close to his ear, she whispered enticing words.
Luther's body definitely reacted.
He was a normal man, after all.
But in his heart, he felt completely numb.
After sleeping with Jolie, his physical desires were satisfied, but his chest felt entirely hollow. Going through the motions made him feel even emptier than before.
…
Luther left anyway. He went downstairs and got into his car.
He slowly smoked a few cigarettes, then stepped on the gas, driving aimlessly through the city streets.
The night was peaceful.
But his heart was in turmoil.
He suddenly felt profoundly lost, not knowing where to go.
He owned so many properties.
*But none of them are home.*
In a daze, he found himself driving to the Silverlake Villa—their old marital home.
The unattended house had fallen into disrepair.
He pushed open the rusted iron gates and drove in.
*Just as cold as last time.*
*But he actually ordered me a coffee. He even specifically asked for it to be hot. Drinking it made me feel so warm. Am I being silly, getting so happy over such a little thing? But it's Luther... I like him so much.*
*At the airport. It's raining.*
*Luther still didn't show up.*
*When I got back to Jadeport City, Mom asked how the date went. I told her it was great. Truth is, I never even saw Luther. He's very busy, he didn't have time for me... He must be busy, right? It's not that he doesn't like me.*
…
Luther read through it, page by page.
When he reached the final page, he slumped down, snapped the journal shut, and gently closed his eyes.
*Hilda once loved him so much.*
Just then, his phone rang.
It was Nathan.
Matilda was critically ill; he needed to rush back immediately.
