Luther hurried back to the Sanford Estate.

Matilda was on her deathbed.

Nathan and Eleanor kept vigil by her bedside, while the senior staff wept quietly. Everyone knew it was only a matter of days now.

A gust of night wind blew past.

Outside the window, the branches bowed low, rustling like approaching spirits.

Luther walked in swiftly.

He slowly crouched down by the bed.

He tightly grasped his grandmother's hand.

Her mind was already drifting away, only a fraction of her spirit tethered to this world. She was waiting. Waiting for her grandson to return because she had unfinished business. She wanted answers. She wanted her Hilda and her Annie.

Her cold hand felt a touch of warmth.

She knew her grandson had returned.

Her clouded eyes could no longer see.

She fumbled weakly until she caught Luther's hand, gripping it tightly.

Her voice was raspy, laced with a quiet sob.

Luther had to lean his ear close to her lips to hear her clearly.

*Luther... where did you put my Hilda?*

*Did you lose her?*

*It's been so, so long since I saw her.*

*She would never be so cruel as to not visit me. You must have done something to break her heart. You made her angry again, didn't you?*

*Things were so perfect back then! Annie would come over right after school, sit next to me, and unwrap a piece of candy. She'd tell me the candy was so sweet, and then she'd recite poems to me. Her little voice was so soft, so beautiful. And Hilda would sit nearby knitting me a sweater for the winter. She said once I got better, she'd take me to Seaview Point... said the sunrise there was absolutely breathtaking.*

*But I can't wait for that sunrise anymore.*

*Just like I can't wait for Hilda.*

*But I miss them so much.*

Luther didn't hesitate any longer.

He slowly stood up and headed for the door.

At first his steps were slow, but then they grew faster and faster.

…

By the time he reached the house in Havenworth City, the sun was already fully up.

It was an elegant home, surrounded by a picturesque cluster of bamboo.

He knocked on the dark front door.

After a long moment, the door opened.

Hilda's radiant face appeared before him.

She was wearing a floral dress, with a cardigan draped over it.

Luther stared intensely at her stomach, seeing the unmistakable, prominent curve of pregnancy.
