Luther sat in the driver's seat, unmoving for a long time.

He reached up and covered his eyes.

His eyes hurt terribly. It had to be the glaring sunlight. It was simply too bright.

After a long while, he finally stepped on the gas.

...

Luther fell sick. The illness came out of nowhere.

Zane Ziegler took care of him for three full days before the fever finally broke.

Zane knew he had gone to Havenworth City.

He guessed it was a sickness of the heart.

By evening, Jolie came over. Fashioning herself as the future hostess of the Century Villa, she first went downstairs to nitpick the maids before heading upstairs to check on Luther. She knew perfectly well that Luther's illness was because of that wretched woman, Hilda.

She truly never expected Hilda to marry into the Judson family.

Was Harrell under some kind of spell?

Hilda was on her second marriage.

And Luther was absolutely heartbroken over it.

Yet when she pushed the door open, Jolie's face was a picture of pure tenderness. She exchanged a few words with Zane, walked him downstairs, and then went back to check on Luther. He was mostly recovered, sitting on the sofa by the floor-to-ceiling window smoking a cigarette, looking every bit like a man who had just had his heart broken.

The woman nestled closely beside him.

She reached out and plucked the cigarette from his lips.

"I had the kitchen prepare some comforting broth."

"It's very light, perfect for when you're feeling run down. I'll feed it to you in a bit."

Luther stared at her.

After a moment, he grabbed the pack, pulled out another cigarette, and lit it. Jolie took it away again.

The man's eyes darkened.

A second later, he roughly pinned her down on the sofa.

He was brutal, taking her without an ounce of tenderness.

But Jolie loved it.

Afterwards, they lay tightly tangled together, their hearts hammering wildly.

Luther's eyes were unfocused. Once he caught his breath, he shoved the woman away and stepped into the bathroom to shower.

Jolie followed him in, wrapping her arms around him from behind. Her voice was soft. "I know you're in a bad mood. It doesn't matter if we can't get custody, we can adopt! Promise me, Luther. I want to get married. I'm 27, I want a family of my own. You'll marry me, won't you? Let's marry in the fall, okay?"
