Before the wedding, Luther made a trip to Havenworth City to see Hilda.
He went quietly, all by himself.
She was heavily pregnant now.
Taking an evening stroll, her arm linked with Harrell's.
Her face was the picture of serenity.
Harrell looked down at her, his gaze intense and entirely focused. It was the kind of look a man only gave when he was deeply in love. Luther had once seen that very same look directed at him on Hilda's face, but now, it was gone forever.
That day, Luther stood from a great distance.
The setting sun stretched his shadow long across the ground.
Making him look utterly desolate.
He told himself this was it.
He was marrying Jolie.
And honestly, Jolie was fine. She was beautiful, capable, and had a great rapport with Naomi Zeller. The partnership with the French firm Mokshalia was practically locked in, largely thanks to Jolie's networking. He needed a capable wife.
Luther left.
He returned to Alpha City to prepare for the wedding.
In reality, Jolie had handled almost all the preparations.
She booked the most exclusive luxury hotel in the city. A Western-style poolside party. She invited a massive crowd, though naturally, most were only attending out of respect for Luther. As for his parents, they remained fiercely adamant about not showing up, causing Jolie to complain endlessly. Luther didn't even bother trying to console her.
The wedding took place in October.
On that day, as Luther put on his haute couture tuxedo.
He vaguely recalled that his wedding with Hilda had also been around September or October. The weather had been exactly like this. Sunny, cloudless. And just like today, the man staring back in the mirror had been completely expressionless, devoid of any groom's joy.
The best man was Zane Ziegler.
He walked in and patted Luther on the shoulder. "Happy wedding day. Try to smile a bit."
Luther didn't say a word.
Zane was well-used to this demeanor by now.
The two of them stood around and smoked a few cigarettes.
Suddenly, Zane asked, "Where's Jolie? I just walked past the bridal suite, and the door was locked tight. Is she hiding some secret bridal look?"
Luther flicked his ash and gave a faint, empty smile. "Women are all like that. They want to look their absolute best today."
Zane laughed along with him.
Just then, the event coordinator rushed over. "Mr. Sanford, the ceremony is about to begin. Mrs. Sanford is asking you to get ready."
Zane straightened out the shoulders of Luther's suit and smiled. "See, isn't that sweet?"
