Luther drove aimlessly.

His phone buzzed relentlessly in the console.

Glancing down, he saw missed calls from Jolie, his parents, and Zane. He scanned the notifications, then simply powered the device off.

An hour later, he pulled up to the airport.

It was a spur-of-the-moment decision.

Or perhaps, it was exactly where his heart had been guiding him all along.

In this exact second, he desperately wanted to see Hilda.

He wanted to hold little Annie.

He wanted to check on the mother and daughter he had so deeply wronged.

He didn't take a private jet, opting instead for the fastest available business-class ticket to Havenworth City. Clad in a crisp white shirt, his striking aura made him stand out in the crowded terminal, but he was completely oblivious to his surroundings. His mind was playing a continuous highlight reel of his years with Hilda.

The coldness, the sweetness, the pain.

He'd had so many chances to hold onto happiness.

And he had thrown every single one of them away.

He had ignored Hilda's loneliness and her suffering, pouring all his gentleness and privilege onto Jolie—a woman of reckless abandon. And it had all led to this ridiculous, pathetic conclusion. How could it not be laughable?

To Luther, the humiliation didn't even matter anymore.

The only thing that mattered was that he had lost the woman he loved.

Lost her forever.

...

Two hours later.

The flight touched down at Havenworth International Airport.

Luther took a cab and had it stop near Harrell's estate.

The sprawling mansion was heavily fortified.

From the outside, it was impossible to catch even a glimpse of what lay within.

Finding a small park nearby, the man sat down on a bench. He sat there in silence, not dialing Hilda's number, just waiting. He knew it was hopeless, yet he sat there foolishly anyway.

He waited until dusk began to fall.

Finally, he saw a black luxury car pull up to the wrought-iron gates in the distance.

The driver stepped out.

He opened the rear door.

Catherine stepped out first.

She reached into the car and gently guided a little girl out. It was Annie.

It was autumn, and little Annie had her hair tied in two pigtails. She happily skipped along, tilting her head up to chatter with Catherine as they walked. "Grandma, is Mommy going to have the baby brother now? Is that why she went to the hospital early?"

Catherine looked down, speaking to the little girl with deep affection.

He couldn't hear what she was saying.

They had already disappeared behind the heavy, ornate doors.

Luther stood there in the fading twilight.

A look of pure devastation washed over his handsome face.

—Hilda was going into labor.
