Just as Luther was getting into his car.
Jolie rushed forward, chasing after him.
Luther sat in the driver's seat, looking up at the woman's panicked face. She seemed to have finally cooled down and was instantly back to playing the victim. She grabbed the edge of the car door, refusing to let him close it. Her voice was urgent and desperate. "Luther, please, just wait a little longer. Just wait until I secure this deal with Naomi."
In the dark of the night, Luther's eyes were completely devoid of warmth.
"I'm done waiting."
"Nothing is going to change."
"Let go of the door."
The woman refused to budge.
Without a second thought, Luther violently yanked the door shut.
A sickening thud echoed through the air.
Jolie's fingers instantly bruised and swelled from the crushing force.
She shrieked and snatched her hand back, still trying to get another word in, but Luther remained entirely expressionless as he put the car in gear and sped away.
The night was stunning.
The black Rolls-Royce Phantom looked even more majestic.
The streetlights danced across the chassis, making it look as though it had been glazed in silver glass.
Inside, the man steered the wheel with a blank expression.
He wasn't the least bit rattled by Jolie's hysterical scene.
Nor was he longing for Summer's warm embrace.
It was as if he had merely gone out for an incredibly mundane dinner.
A terribly ordinary dinner.
And the food hadn't even been that good.
The man reached out and turned on the stereo.
It was a track Hilda had played in the car once.
She had put it on loop.
She must have really loved this song.
It was an old track from an obscure female singer, her voice echoing with an ethereal yet husky sorrow.
*One last embrace, as if we never happened.*
*Is that okay? It's too late for explanations.*
*Let it go,*
*Whatever I gave, it doesn't matter anymore.*
