Alpha City First Detention Center.

A cramped visitation room.

Even with the lights on during the day, it was incredibly dim.

Hilda Cassidy sat quietly on a bench, facing the wall. Down the hallway extending beside her, the faint clinking of metal echoed. Soon, Jolie Lovell was escorted in, her hands cuffed.

She walked slowly and took a seat across from Hilda.

Between them sat a battered, worn-out table.

The guard shackled her feet to the table leg before stepping out.

Only three people remained in the oppressive space.

A deathly silence hung in the air.

Jolie glared intently at Hilda, then at Luther Sanford standing nearby, her voice sounding like a cornered animal.

"What a shame."

"You weren't the one who got hit!"

"If Harrell knew he was going to die for you, do you think he would have chickened out? I bet he would've tucked his tail between his legs. Men are all the same—sweet-talking you when things are good, but completely useless when it actually matters. Don't you agree... my dear sister?"

Hilda stood up without a single word.

She had lost so much weight in just a week.

Just seven days ago, she was the blissfully happy Mrs. Judson.

Now, Jolie had ruined everything.

Smack. A vicious slap landed directly on Jolie's face.

It wasn't enough.

Another followed immediately.

Hilda lost count of how many times she struck her.

Jolie's face swelled rapidly, burning with agony as if her skin were splitting open. Her head slumped to the side, too weak to hold itself up. Yet, she began to laugh—a maniacal, unhinged sound. Slowly, she lifted her eyes to glare at Hilda, her voice faint and raspy. "It hurts, doesn't it, sister? You're in so much pain. But did you think I wasn't suffering too? You were always the legitimate Cassidy heiress. You were born with everything. Would it have killed you to let me win just once? But no, you had to be so passionately in love with Luther. You clung to him. I spent so much energy finally claiming him, and you still haunted us like a ghost. You married his cousin! Who were you trying to show off your happiness to? Even the core formula for Chantelle Claire ended up in your hands. My dear sister, you were born with all the luck in the world—so why couldn't you leave a path open for me? You forced my hand. You forced me down this twisted, monstrous path. This is all your fault! I tried so many times, so why couldn't I kill you? Why, when it really mattered, wasn't it you driving that car? Why did Harrell have to die for you?"

Hilda delivered another brutal slap.

Crimson blood trickled from the corner of Jolie's mouth.
