Stepping out of the detention center.
Snowflakes were actually beginning to fall from the sky.
It was freezing, absolutely freezing.
Hilda tilted her head back, watching the snow fall.
Her gaze was entirely focused, a hint of moisture glossing her eyes.
Luther saw how thin her clothes were. He slipped off his own overcoat to drape it over her shoulders, but she violently shoved it away, as if brushing off something filthy.
A flicker of hurt crossed Luther's expression.
Hilda's voice was incredibly soft. "Why didn't you tell me she was diagnosed with a psychiatric condition?"
Luther remained silent.
He had only found out about it yesterday himself.
Hilda slowly lowered her head and looked quietly at Luther, her voice growing even fainter. "I truly wish I had never met you."
She turned to get into the car.
But that single sentence had clearly pushed Luther over the edge.
He grabbed her from behind, wrapping his arms tightly around her.
The next second, he shoved her into the backseat.
The cramped space of the car left them with almost no room to maneuver as they faced off. Their breathing was ragged and chaotic, though not with the passion they once shared as husband and wife.
One was filled with hatred, the other consumed by agitation.
She hated him.
She absolutely despised him.
The man quickly yanked off his overcoat and forcefully wrapped it around her. He pressed his face against the hair by her cheek, his voice rougher and more gravelly than ever before. "Do you think I wanted Harrell to get hurt? He isn't just your husband; he's my cousin. We played together as kids. We grew up together. There were years I even spent my summer vacations in Havenworth City. My bond with Harrell is far deeper than you could ever imagine."
Hilda remained completely expressionless.
"Is that so?"
"Then can you let go of me now, Luther?"
Luther immediately released her.
He looked at her as if he had seen a ghost.
On the way back to the hospital.
Luther drove while Hilda sat in the back, completely silent.
She was incredibly quiet, her face void of any emotion, her tears having dried up long ago.
She had even prepared herself for the worst-case scenario.
If Harrell never woke up for the rest of his life.
Then she would stay by his side forever.
She would care for his parents in their old age. Little Annie and Landon would grow up in the Judson family. Landon carried the Judson name. Harrell had a son; the rest of his life wouldn't be too lonely.
