From that day on, Hilda was sick.

She didn't love Luther.

But she was still a woman, someone with natural human desires and emotions.

The words Luther whispered that night had broken something inside her.

Her body had gone completely cold.

She no longer felt any physical desire whatsoever.

No matter how much he tried to seduce her, it was entirely useless.

Because she was still in her first trimester, Luther hadn't been overly demanding, so he hadn't realized it yet. But Hilda knew she was sick. Every time Luther touched her, she felt a visceral, biological revulsion. When he occasionally forced his affections on her, she just lay there completely motionless, enduring it. Not only did she feel absolutely nothing, but every passing second was pure torture.

That evening, Yorick organized a dinner.

Luther came home briefly at dusk.

He had dinner with his wife and children.

After dinner, he even checked over Annie's homework.

By 7:00 PM, he walked into the master bedroom on the second floor. Hilda was sitting on the sofa reading a philosophy book. Her expression was serene, as if she had fully adapted to her current life and her role as Mrs. Sanford. Harrell Judson had been entirely erased from her existence.

Luther was thoroughly obsessed with her lately.

True, the month he forced her into pregnancy had been violently chaotic.

But for a man who hadn't been sexually active until nearly thirty, the repression had been immense. He actually loved that kind of unhinged, animalistic intensity, but since she was pregnant, he had to strictly restrain himself. Even if he wanted her, he had to wait until her body could handle it.

He sat down beside her and brought up Naomi.

"Naomi has been reinstated."

"She's staying on at Mokshalia."

"Your partnership with her will continue as usual."

Hilda closed her book and looked at him. "Am I supposed to thank you?"

Luther caught the edge of displeasure in her voice.

Wanting to appease her, he offered a faint smile. "Should I give her another promotion?"

Hilda looked away. "That won't be necessary."

He studied her intently for a moment before smoothly changing the subject. "By the way, Yorick is hosting a dinner tonight. He wants to formally apologize to you. He knows you're pregnant, so he promised there won't be any smoking. Do you want to come and hang out for a bit?"

Hilda looked up at him again. "I thought you would have cut ties with him by now."

Yorick had openly lusted after her.

Yet Luther didn't seem to care.

Of course Luther didn't care.

Because Yorick had zero chance of ever getting his hands on her.

Yorick was nothing more than a pawn to him. As a beneficiary of the situation, showing a little grace was just good business. But since Hilda didn't want to go, he didn't push it. He wrapped an arm around her slender shoulders, his tone incredibly intimate. "I just saw you cooped up in the house all day and thought you might want to get out. If you don't want to go, then stay here. How about you pick out an outfit for me? Hmm?"

Hilda hesitated for a few seconds before obliging.

Watching her slender back.

Luther felt a deep surge of satisfaction.

Honestly, over time, once she forgot about her history with Harrell, he felt truly happy. His life was perfect. No one in their social circle would ever dare bring up the past in his presence. What happened, happened—it made no difference now, especially since he was the one who had wronged her first.

The phone in his pocket buzzed.
