The VIP hospital ward.
Hilda's admission was kept strictly under wraps.
Even Nathan Sanford and his wife were kept in the dark.
Hilda had lost a massive amount of blood and remained unconscious.
At 4:00 PM.
Secretary Lori pushed the door open and saw Luther standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, both hands shoved into his pockets, lost in thought. Suppressing a heavy sigh, she said softly, "Mr. Sanford, the meetings have been pushed back three days, per your instructions. The board members are expressing a lot of dissatisfaction. Because this project is incredibly crucial, they're all anxious for it to launch as soon as possible. They're counting on the net profits from the second half of the year to send the stock prices skyrocketing."
How could Luther not know its importance?
But his mind was completely void of business right now.
His sanity had been thoroughly shredded by Hilda.
She had made the right gamble. The moment he saw her blood staining her clothes, the moment he saw her bathed in crimson, he was utterly terrified. Even now, his heart was still violently palpitating. He had never relied on medication before, but today, he had swallowed a pill to calm his nerves.
Luther ignored Lori's report.
Instead, he murmured, "Lori, did I push too hard?"
Hilda's hold over him was too deep.
Even Jolie Lovell had never managed to disrupt his career.
He cared entirely too much about Hilda.
His moods swung entirely on her actions.
A single smile from her gave him a profound sense of fragile happiness.
He felt like he was losing himself.
Yet, despite all his eager attempts to please her, she didn't seem to care. The only person she cared about was Naomi Zeller. Naomi's tragedy was an accident; he genuinely never expected things to go sideways for her in a French jail. He had promised to compensate her, but Hilda wouldn't listen. She cared so deeply about these people.
— She cared about everyone except him, Luther Sanford.
And yet, she used to love him more than anyone.
Lori rarely inserted herself into Luther's domestic affairs.
But she spoke up for Hilda anyway: "Naomi Zeller is incredibly important to her."
Luther suddenly asked, "And what about me? If it were me in her place, would her heart ache for me?"
That was a question Lori genuinely couldn't answer.
...
At 8:00 PM, Hilda finally woke up.
The moment she opened her eyes, the faint smell of antiseptic hit her senses. By the floor-to-ceiling window stood a tall, slender silhouette. She gently closed her eyes, refusing to look at him.
Luther's voice was low and gravelly.
"I know you're awake!"
"The children are being looked after, so you don't need to worry."
"I know this is hard for you to accept, but the damage is done, and whatever compensation you want me to provide, I'll do it... Doesn't Naomi like sponsoring orphans? I'll allocate 2 billion to let her set up a charity foundation, okay? If you really love her that much, I'll adopt her as my sister. From now on, she'll be a part of the Sanford family."
