Luther was just about to head into a meeting.
Secretary Lori pushed the door open, her expression complicated. "Mr. Sanford, your wife is here."
Hilda?
Luther was genuinely surprised.
But knowing his wife had taken the initiative to visit him made him incredibly happy. He told Lori to push the meeting back by half an hour. Just as he finished giving the instructions, Hilda walked in.
Her face was ghostly pale.
Luther tilted his chin, signaling for his secretary to leave the room.
Once Lori was gone, Luther stood up and walked over to greet her, flashing a gentle, affectionate smile. "What brings you here so suddenly? Why is your face so pale? Should I have a doctor take a look at you?"
He even reached out to intimately caress her baby bump.
Playing the part of the deeply devoted husband.
Hilda watched him in complete silence, not a single ripple of emotion in her eyes. She finally acknowledged the chasm between her and him. Luther was a predator forged in the bloody arenas of the business world. To achieve his goals, even if it meant destroying someone else's life or causing catastrophic damage, he could completely dismiss it. A casual 'I'll elevate her career to the next level' was his way of washing his hands of it.
That was 70 percent of Naomi's hearing.
Under such grueling conditions, Naomi had molded herself into something perfect.
And because of Luther, her life was ruined.
She had chosen to be with Colin. It wasn't that Colin was a bad man, but Naomi originally would have had a world of choices at her feet.
Hilda spoke, her voice wooden: "You know Naomi lost her hearing, don't you?"
The man froze.
That microscopic shift in his expression gave Hilda all the answers she needed.
He had known all along, but he simply didn't care. To him, it wasn't a big deal.
Hilda lowered her eyes, her voice low and steady. "Luther, in your heart, is everyone else just worthless? Beneath you? Is that why you treat the things others hold precious like garbage? But what about you? What do you hold precious?"
She picked up a fruit knife from the nearby table.
Luther's expression turned frigid, his voice dropping to a glacial chill—
"What are you doing, Hilda?"
"Are you going to kill me?"
"Didn't you agree to come back and be my wife? But then you secretly tried to run away with Harrell. What the hell was that? I gave you so many chances, yet you still chose to leave with him without a second thought. And now you blame me? You're the one who dragged Naomi into this, but I'm still willing to compensate her. Don't you treat her like a spoiled child? I can spoil her too! Having an extra daughter around makes no difference to me."
The tip of the blade pressed against his crisp white shirt.
Luther grabbed the handle of the knife, pulling it even closer to his own chest.
