Lori braced herself for a long time.
Finally, she spoke: "Mr. Sanford, Mrs. Sanford might be gone."
What?
What did she mean, 'gone'?
For a long while, Luther's face was utterly blank.
The world around him seemed to lose all sound.
The entire world went silent.
Leaving only Lori's words echoing in the void.
Mrs. Sanford might be gone.
When he finally snapped back to reality, he stared at Lori, jaw clenched, and demanded, "What do you mean?"
Lori tried to hold it in, but she couldn't. Tears slipped from the corners of her eyes. She didn't wipe them away, her voice coming out fast and frantic: "The sanatorium called. There's a massive fire. Mrs. Sanford was trapped on the second floor and they couldn't reach her. Mr. Sanford, the fire started over an hour ago."
The blood drained from Luther's face.
Leaving behind nothing but a deathly pallor.
Lori continued mechanically, "I've already contacted your father to take charge of the situation, and I dispatched a specialized fire and rescue team to keep trying, but... Mr. Sanford, you need to prepare yourself for the worst."
Tears kept streaming down her face.
Summer was stunned. When she finally processed it, she instinctively reached out to steady Luther.
Perhaps in that moment, it wasn't about money or status.
She genuinely felt for the man.
He might have just lost his beloved wife.
Luther violently shoved her hand away.
He stumbled toward the door. Lori heard something crash heavily to the floor, and once she snapped to her senses, she hurried after him. The apartment was suddenly empty. Summer stood there, staring at the coat Luther had dropped, a smile blossoming on her face that was far more tragic than a sob.
...
The full moon felt like a mourning tribute to the night.
By the time Luther rushed to the sanatorium.
