The glaring overhead lights were all killed.
Damien was hauled in front of Luther.
The man sat in the booth, impeccably dressed, staring at him in dead silence.
A moment later, a stack of files was tossed onto the table in front of him.
"Jocelyn Croix. Two years old. Listed as Damien Croix's daughter."
"Damien's 'wife' supposedly ran off with another man."
"Joyce Croix. 31 years old. Listed as Damien's biological sister, currently working as an art teacher at Clearwater Academy making $6,500 a month. Loves movies and art galleries. Her only family members are her brother Damien and her niece Jocelyn."
"I underestimated you, Damien."
"You actually pulled off a magic trick."
"You turned Mrs. Sanford into your biological sister! Those forged documents couldn't have been cheap, could they? And my daughter somehow became yours, complete with a fabricated runaway mother! Should I be moved? Touched by your immense generosity that you only made Hilda your sister instead of your wife?"
Damien's Adam's apple bobbed nervously.
He stared at the man in front of him.
He couldn't gauge Luther's intentions.
So silence was his safest defense.
A swift kick to the back of Damien's legs forced him to his knees, and a heavy hand shoved his head down. Pinned to the floor, he listened to the aristocratic man continue: "I found Hilda, but she doesn't remember me. And she looks like she's having the time of her life. You've put me in a very difficult position, Damien. Tell me, what should I do? Do I drag her back by force to be Mrs. Sanford, or do I let her keep playing the blissfully ignorant Joyce?"
Damien wrenched his head up like a madman.
Glaring at Luther.
Damien's gaunt face now bore a scar.
Likely earned in the fire.
A permanent brand.
