In the suburbs.
On the top floor of an apartment complex.
Joyce woke up early to find Damien smoking in the living room.
She walked over, snatched the cigarette right out of his fingers, and scolded him with a pout: "No smoking in the house! Jocelyn is only two, her little lungs are sensitive! When we came back from the hospital last time, you even said the air here wasn't good for her and that we should move. And now you're smoking inside! I'm really going to hit you."
Damien lifted his exhausted eyes to look at his sister.
No, the woman he loved.
Why did he name her Joyce?
Because she brought joy to his heart.
A lifetime of joy.
He didn't want to possess her.
He only wanted to protect her for the rest of his life.
For the past two years, she had been radiant, enjoying the beauty of life under his shelter. But that glass dome was about to shatter. She was about to become Luther's prized possession all over again, and there was nothing he could do to stop it.
Damien took a deep mental breath.
He crushed the remaining cigarette butt and smiled faintly: "I won't do it again."
Joyce looked at his day-old clothes and the fresh stubble on his jaw, murmuring softly, "Are you missing her again? Once Jocelyn is a little older, I'll help take care of her so you can start dating again! You're so handsome, Damien. Plenty of women would love you."
Damien's eyes burned.
He softly replied, "Okay."
Forcing himself to perk up, he gave a strained smile: "I've got good news. I got a new job. Remember how I studied abroad? Someone recognized my potential and hired me as a financial advisor. The salary is insanely high. That dream of getting a new place for Jocelyn is finally happening. Let's move closer to the city, maybe get a small standalone house. Something with a yard where Jocelyn can kick a ball around."
Joyce threw herself at him, throwing her arms around his neck and cheering, "Really? You're the best, Damien!"
Damien buried his face in the crook of her neck.
Tears welled in his eyes.
"Yeah."
"Things are going to get better."
Damien knew this was all just a transition phase.
Once Luther secured Joyce, he would find a way to kick Damien to the curb. There was no way that man would let him live under the same roof as her. He'd find some excuse to exile him abroad. Joyce belonged to Luther, and Jocelyn would be taken back too. He knew exactly how wealthy men played their games.
But Joyce knew nothing.
She was drowned in pure joy.
She truly believed her brother could conquer the world.
She had no idea he used to be a gigolo. A high-end escort paid to sleep with rich women.
"Hurry up and get to work."
"Didn't you say you're getting promoted to homeroom teacher today?"
"You've got morning reading to supervise, right?"
Joyce picked up a sandwich and took a bite.
