Today was Landon's birthday.

He knew Ms. Croix was his mother.

Having his mom back to celebrate his birthday made the little guy extra clingy. After getting washed up, he insisted she tuck him in.

Joyce adored children.

She felt an indescribable, magnetic pull toward Annie and Landon.

Without much hesitation, she agreed.

Annie went off to do her homework.

She got to see her mom every day anyway.

...

Night fell.

The newly five-year-old Landon, dressed in his pajamas, lay in his mother's arms like an infant, being gently rocked. He tilted his head back, staring up at her, completely unwilling to go to sleep. But he was still a child, and soon enough, his eyelids grew heavy, eventually losing the battle to exhaustion as they fluttered shut.

He was an exceptionally beautiful child.

As he slept, he looked so much like Jocelyn.

Joyce watched him in a trance, involuntarily leaning down to press a soft kiss to his forehead. She gently stroked his cheek, wondering just how hard it must have been for these children to lose their mother, forced to endure their father's volatile, unpredictable temper every day.

Carefully laying Landon down.

Joyce switched off the overhead light, leaving only a small nightlight glowing.

She tiptoed out of the room.

The hallway lights were starkly bright, and the sudden glare made her squint instinctively.

When she opened her eyes again.

Luther was standing right in front of her.

The man had changed clothes, now wearing a dark grey shirt and black dress pants. He didn't look like he was getting ready for bed. He stared at her, his voice low. "I'll drive you home."

Joyce's immediate reflex was to decline.

She had driven her own car.

She was just about to brush past him and head downstairs.

When Wilma let out a shocked gasp from behind her.

"Ms. Croix, your period started!"

"There's a massive red stain on the back of your dress!"

Joyce's face erupted in flames.

She was wearing a pure white dress today.

Her period was a full six days early this month.

She was absolutely mortified, especially with Luther standing right there, and for a moment, she was entirely paralyzed. Luther, however, fixed his deep gaze on her for a few seconds before turning to Wilma with complete nonchalance. "Come with me to fetch one of my wife's unworn dresses for Ms. Croix to change into... You don't mind, do you, Ms. Croix?"

Joyce clamped a hand over the back of her skirt, speechless.

Wilma quickly followed him in.

A moment later, she emerged with a long dress that still had the price tags attached. The style was very similar to Joyce's taste, and the size looked perfect. She also handed over an unopened pack of sanitary underwear. Joyce was in no position to argue—unless she wanted to drive all the way home with a bloody stain on her backside, putting herself on display for the entire neighborhood.

Wilma led her to the guest suite to change.
