Aegis Group.

The top-floor executive suite.

Luther sat behind a massive executive desk, reviewing documents. Behind him stretched a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows that bathed the room in the warm, golden glow of the autumn sun. The man sat there, breathtakingly handsome and immaculately dressed.

Lori pushed the door open and spoke softly, "Mr. Sanford, Summer is here."

Luther set his pen down. "Send her in."

Lori stepped aside to let the woman enter.

Then she pulled the door shut and left.

Summer stood by the door, fidgeting with obvious anxiety.

She had always known exactly where she stood.

Lately, rumors had been swirling that Mr. Sanford had found an even better stand-in for Mrs. Sanford—an elementary school teacher. To court this woman, Mr. Sanford had actually transferred Annie to her school and even hired her as a private tutor just for an excuse to see her. Summer had never been granted such an honor; she was wildly jealous, yet she also knew her time was officially up.

She had waited, overtly and covertly, for two whole years.

But Mr. Sanford had given her nothing more than a job.

She knew she ought to give up.

But she simply didn't have the courage to step out of the one sanctuary that shielded her from the rain.

She was technically just the fourth secretary, but everyone in the company knew her real 'position.'

Nobody cared if she actually did any work.

She was essentially a decorative vase.

Because no one knew if or when Mr. Sanford might summon her to his bed.

Now that it was finally time to leave, despite her bitter reluctance, Summer softly voiced what was truly in her heart: "Mr. Sanford, I didn't come here just for a job... I'm..."

Rich men were inherently ruthless.

Luther completely cut off any chance for her to finish that sentence.

He held up a hand to stop her, then looked up. His expression was identical to how he viewed any low-level employee—utterly stripped of any past intimacy or ambiguity. His tone was ruthlessly strictly business: "Once you resign, you can ask Lori to arrange another job for you. Placing you in one of Aegis Group's partner companies won't be an issue, entirely depending on your preference. Also, here is a check for you to take. Do not ever look for me again. If you run into genuine difficulties, you can contact Lori. If it's something she can't handle, then I won't be able to help you either... Am I making myself entirely clear?"

How could Summer not understand?

This was a total buyout!

A massive check and a new job.

As for reaching out to Lori for future help, that was just empty corporate politeness.

After wasting years of her life, Summer had finally accepted her fate.

She gently accepted the check and glanced down to see the figure—five million.

If she budgeted carefully, it was enough to live comfortably for the rest of her life.

Summer made her decision in a split second. Without any theatrical fuss, she accepted the check, thanked Luther, and expressed her gratitude for his care over the years... She wasn't stupid; she knew Luther didn't have to dismiss her personally, let alone hand over five million. He just wanted a clean break, ensuring she wouldn't lose her mind and try to harm his new lover.

She wasn't suicidal enough for that.

Smart, compliant women made men's lives easier.

Luther didn't waste another word, simply lifting his chin to dismiss her.

As she turned to leave, Summer couldn't resist stealing one last glance at the man, but he was already buried in his paperwork, refusing to spare her another second of his attention. She finally realized that his feelings for her had never amounted to more than fleeting amusement—she was just a tool to stave off his loneliness. Because he was terrified of upsetting Mrs. Sanford, he had never once slept with her, and now he was actually guarding his chastity for his new flame. He must be madly in love!

Women are naturally curious creatures.

Summer had truly let it all go.

But she found herself desperately wanting to catch a glimpse of this Ms. Croix.
