The next morning, Hilda didn't wake up until nine.
The apartment was quiet. She got out of bed barefoot and walked to the children's room. The little blanket was folded neatly, and a set of pajamas sat at the head of the bed, right next to a stuffed bunny. Beside the pillow was a note—
[Mommy, get some good rest.]
[Daddy took the baby to school.]
Hilda's eyes grew moist as she read it.
She wanted so badly to give little Annie a warm, complete home.
But Luther loved Jolie. She couldn't let her daughter grow up in a three-person emotional mess, which was why she never once considered getting back together with Luther... Quite rational, wasn't it? A rationality bought with tears.
Hilda had a lot to do. Even though her head was still pounding, she headed to the company first.
While driving halfway there, she unexpectedly received a call from Colin Sutton.
She had no idea how he got her number.
Colin's tone was aristocratic yet entirely grandfatherly. "Hilda, I ordered a Bentley Bentayga for you at the auto show a few days ago. It's very suitable for a young woman to drive. Where should I have it delivered? How about that villa? After all, that's practically the love nest for you and that rascal Soren."
Hilda didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
She explained quite seriously, "Mr. Sutton, my relationship with Soren is purely platonic."
Colin nodded understandingly—
"I understand, I understand."
"Best not to be too flashy about it."
"How about this, I'll gift you another painting by The Bibliophile. The artist is highly sought after right now; both Luther and Harrell absolutely adore the work. My dear, I'm only willing to part with it now. In the future, it might be impossible to buy at any price."
...
Uh.
Hilda was still quite moved.
Even though it was a misunderstanding, Colin treated her incredibly well. Weighing her options, she said softly, "When Soren gets back, let me treat you to a meal!"
—She would clarify things face-to-face then.
But Colin interpreted those words entirely differently.
He was highly satisfied and extremely pleased, telling Hilda to make sure she brought the child along.
After hanging up the phone.
Hilda couldn't help but shake her head gently.
When she arrived at the Indigo Tower.
Before she even had a moment to settle into her office.
"And that little bastard of yours. Just because she called Luther 'Daddy' a few times, you think she's suddenly the real princess of the Sanford family? You didn't even consummate the marriage on your wedding night, did you? Hilda... how do you magically conjure up a child in broad daylight?"
...
Hilda remained entirely calm: "And your point is?"
Jolie's cold laugh grew louder, her radiant face twisting with malice. "My point is, take your little bastard and get the hell away from him! Don't you dare attend that old bat's banquet, you hear me? If you insist on stealing the spotlight, then I'm sorry, but I'll publicly expose the child's true background. You popped her out after sneaking around with some random low-class laborer, right? Look at these photos. Isn't this you with that guy?"
She threw several photos onto the table.
—It was Soren holding little Annie at the villa.
Clearly taken with a telephoto lens from a distance.
Hilda picked them up, looked at them for a long time, and said softly, "Then go right ahead."
Jolie gritted her teeth. "You think I don't have the guts?"
Hilda gave a very faint smile—
"Jolie, I told you I won't back down anymore."
"What is mine, you cannot take."
"What I throw away, you'll just have to wait to pick up after I'm gone."
