The farce was far from over.
The scandal couldn't be contained. Someone had recorded the confrontation and leaked it online.
Within half an hour, six trending topics exploded on social media.
—Luther Sanford was a cuckold.
—Mrs. Sanford had an illegitimate child with the Sutton heir.
The news was everywhere.
The Sanford banquet was effectively ruined.
Luther and his father saw the guests out.
Terrified that her son would take his anger out on Hilda, Eleanor wanted to keep her at the estate for the night. But Luther scooped Annie into his arms with one hand and turned to his parents. "I'm taking Hilda and the child back. We'll deal with this tomorrow. Take care of my grandmother."
Once Luther's car drove off.
Nathan let out a heavy sigh.
Eleanor was in tears. "Nathan, is there any possibility at all that Annie is actually Luther's?"
Nathan lowered his voice. "Highly unlikely. When they first got married, I heard rumors that Luther walked out on his wedding night. They've been living apart all these years. Where would a baby suddenly come from? Complaining won't fix anything now. We need to prepare for a divorce. With everything out in the open like this, even if Luther wanted to stay with Hilda, it's impossible. But you were right about one thing—no matter what happens, that Lovell girl is never joining our family. Her actions were far too vicious. Even if Hilda made a mistake, Luther was the one who pushed her away first."
Eleanor leaned against her husband's shoulder. "I'm glad you're being fair. In my opinion, whatever gifts we gave should stay with them. Think of it as honoring the time we spent thinking of Annie as our granddaughter. I really do adore that little girl... Why couldn't she be our blood?"
Nathan could only offer quiet comfort.
...
In the car ride back.
The silence was suffocating.
Annie stared with wide eyes while Hilda held her gently. Reassured by her mother's presence, the little girl gradually calmed down and stopped feeling so afraid.
—Luther was terrifyingly restrained and calm.
This completely blindsided Hilda.
She hadn't expected him to react this way.
When the car parked below their apartment building, Annie had already fallen asleep.
Luther got out, walked around, and lifted the child into his arms.
Hilda couldn't help but whisper, "Luther."
He shot her a glance. "We'll talk upstairs."
In his eyes, Hilda saw a ruthless finality.
Her heart pounded frantically. "What are you going to do, Luther?"
This time, he didn't even look at her. He carried Annie straight into the elevator. Hilda froze for a few seconds before rushing to catch up. She didn't even have time to grab her coat, stepping into the freezing night wind in only her evening gown. By the time she reached the elevator, her nose was red from the cold, making her look incredibly fragile.
Luther glanced down at her.
He didn't say a word.
—Like he was discussing the weather or what to eat for dinner.
Hilda slowly processed his words.
The DNA test was just a farce to him.
He had never believed Annie was his biological daughter.
This entire arrangement was explicitly designed to turn her into his mistress.
It was a lavish offer, but Hilda would never accept it.
She was going to wait for the DNA results and divorce him with her dignity intact.
When Hilda spoke, her lips were practically trembling—
"Luther, I told you Annie is your child. Why won't you just wait for the DNA results?"
"I'm not going to Switzerland."
"And my mother won't be staying there long-term, either."
The moment the words left her mouth, Luther slowly closed the distance between them.
He grabbed her chin with one hand, his fingers digging harshly into her skin. He stared coldly into her eyes and said—
"You're asking me why?"
"Because I never actually slept with you."
