Since someone had pointed it out.
Colin Sutton could no longer pretend he wasn't there.
He stepped out of the crowd and, instead of denying it, claimed the situation directly—
"That's right. That is indeed my son, Soren."
"If people are saying she belongs to the Sutton family, and Luther here isn't stepping up, then she's a Sutton. I say we don't even need a DNA test. That brat of mine will take full responsibility. As her grandfather, my welcome gift won't be any less than the Sanfords'. In fact, it'll be more."
"Come home with Grandpa, sweet girl."
"Hilda, wrap things up with Luther quickly. When my son gets back from France, you two can get your marriage license. I'll make sure you have a spectacular wedding."
...
The crowd descended into chaos.
Whispers erupted everywhere.
They had thought Hilda was ruined.
—Who could have expected this twist?
That illegitimate child was actually a Sutton? And Soren Sutton was young, passionate, and incredibly handsome. Suddenly, the society wives didn't know whether to envy Hilda or despise her. Either way, regardless of which man she ended up with, she was guaranteed unimaginable wealth.
Jolie panicked.
Wasn't he just some nobody?
How did he turn into the Sutton heir?
Before Hilda could clear her name, another figure slowly stepped forward.
—It was Harrell Judson.
He scanned the crowd before speaking smoothly.
"Mr. Sutton, I understand you're eager for a grandchild."
"And I can relate."
"But I've been to that villa. Soren merely rented the house. He wasn't Hilda's boyfriend. In fact, the night you invited us over to view The Bibliophile's paintings, I saw your son and Annie sitting in the car. Annie just treats him like an older brother figure. That makes their relationship pretty clear... I think it's best we let the married couple sort this out themselves. A DNA test will definitively prove who the father is. It won't wrong an innocent person, and it won't drag innocent bystanders down. Don't you agree, Mr. Sutton?"
...
His words were perfectly objective.
Highly convincing.
Even Luther's parents felt it was the right approach.
Nathan already had a solid guess in his heart.
—Luther's silence spoke volumes.
His gaze toward Hilda cooled slightly. Though his tone remained polite, the familial warmth was gone, replaced by a businesslike detachment. "Let's do as Harrell suggests. A DNA test will bring the truth to light."
Watching Luther's expression, Lori knew this test had to happen.
She quickly contacted a testing facility.
Eleanor had seen every kind of manipulator in her life.
She sneered, "Don't call me that. We aren't family. Am I supposed to thank you for turning our household upside down? I'll make this perfectly clear: even if Luther and Hilda divorce, I will never let you into this family. If you want to marry into the Sanfords, you'll have to step over my dead body."
Jolie's face drained of color.
She couldn't believe Luther's mother would treat her like this.
Hadn't she always liked her in the past?
Luther shot a glance at Lori.
She immediately sprang into action. "I'll handle it right away, Mr. Sanford."
She had security drag the kicking and screaming woman away.
Sitting in the car, it took Jolie a long time to recover. She asked Lori softly, "Was I wrong?"
Lori couldn't even formulate an answer.
Wrong didn't begin to cover it.
It was a catastrophic mistake.
How could someone cause such a massive disaster?
If the child wasn't Luther's, why would Hilda show up so confidently? So what if they hadn't formally slept together? As long as there was any intimate contact, any exposure to the man at all, pregnancy was entirely possible, even if the chances were low.
—The child was definitely Mr. Sanford's.
