On the phone, Waylon Grayson had only mentioned that Caleb had punched Rowan, leading Lyra to instinctively assume Rowan was the one badly injured.
Mr. Lawrence stepped forward and murmured, "Mrs. Fairchild, your husband is on the phone..."
Delilah hurriedly walked over to take the call.
Lyra glanced at her mother, then spun on her heel and rushed out the door. All she wanted was to get to the hospital immediately.
But just as she was about to get into her car, Caleb's vehicle pulled into the driveway.
Seeing Caleb step out—his face bruised and swollen, looking like a total wreck—Lyra gasped and covered her mouth.
Waylon had completely downplayed the situation.
This wasn't a case of Caleb beating up Rowan.
It was painfully obvious that Rowan had beaten Caleb far worse.
Nobody ever won in a fight against Rowan Jameson!
Caleb's injuries were ten—no, a hundred times worse than Rowan's!
To think Lyra had foolishly treated Rowan's wounds earlier. She should have ripped them open and let them fester until they were beyond healing.
Lyra's eyes brimmed with tears as she choked out, "Caleb..."
Caleb reached out to ruffle her hair, forcing a tight smile. "I'm fine."
Delilah could only sigh at the sight of her battered son.
Shortly after, Arthur returned home. He stepped out of his car with a glacial expression, completely ignoring his son's injuries. As he brushed past his children, he ordered, "Caleb, come with me."
Delilah quickly stepped in his path. "Can't whatever it is wait until he's rested?"
But Arthur wasn't having it. He marched straight into his study, dragging Caleb along with him.
The moment the door clicked shut, a ruthless, booming reprimand echoed through the wood. Arthur furiously berated him for being so impulsive and reckless at his age.
Taking a deep breath, Caleb laid out the entire story, explaining how Rowan had falsely and unjustly accused Lyra.
Yet Arthur remained entirely unmoved. "It doesn't matter what he said or did," he stated in a tone of iron. "You threw the first punch, which means you lost. In a couple of days, you're going to the Jamesons to apologize."
In just two months, her brother was going to be a groom.
And Kayla deserved to be a happy bride.
Lyra simply couldn't risk any more complications.
As she sobbed against his chest, a strange feeling suddenly washed over her—something felt off.
But she didn't have time to dwell on it then.
It wasn't until she was about to fall asleep that night that the realization hit her.
Waylon had clearly accompanied Caleb to the hospital, so why had he called and told her to go to the Jameson Group?
He had made her run a fool's errand.
She didn't even want to see Rowan anymore. Did Waylon still think she was in love with him?
Was he trying to set them up?
