Two days later, Lyra arrived at the Jameson estate with a gift basket of fruit. In the past, she never would have brought something so generic and formal, but now that she had severed ties with Rowan Jameson, she was just a guest. A little polite distance was necessary.
She handed the fruit to the maid, who looked surprised by her newfound formality. Still, considering Lyra hadn't visited in half a year, the maid figured she was just trying to make a good impression.
Victoria Jameson descended the stairs, exuding her usual elegant grace. A warm smile spread across her face. "Lyra, you're finally back."
"Victoria," Lyra greeted softly.
Victoria walked over, her eyes full of affection, and pulled Lyra down to sit beside her on the sofa. "Lyra, it's been a while, and you've lost weight. How are you adjusting to working at your family's company?"
"Everything is going well," Lyra replied. "Victoria, I came here today to call off the engagement."
The color drained from Victoria's face. Even the nearby maids gasped in shock.
Victoria, knowing exactly why Lyra was saying this, let out a heavy sigh. "Lyra, you went abroad because you were mad at Rowan, didn't you? It's all right. Charles and I have already given him a piece of our minds."
She patted Lyra's hand. "Rowan just feels a sense of gratitude toward that woman. She saved his life once, so they've been spending some time together. Please don't overthink it."
The rumors about Rowan and Jasmine Ford had reached the Jamesons' ears, and Victoria was furious about it. The Fords were practically nobodies in Seaborne City, far beneath the Jamesons' standards. Furthermore, the Fairchilds and Jamesons had a longstanding engagement. Breaking it would be a massive insult to the Fairchild family, and Alistair Jameson would never allow it.
Lyra discreetly pulled her hand away. "That's not it, Victoria. The truth is, I just don't have feelings for Rowan anymore."
Ever since he had forced the divorce in her previous life, all her love for him had vanished. Not to mention the fact that she now knew all the terrible things Rowan would eventually do to the Fairchild family.
"Lyra..." Victoria was stunned. She had never imagined a day when Lyra wouldn't love her son. The girl had practically worshipped him! Victoria had always viewed Lyra as her future daughter-in-law. But after disappearing for half a year and letting Rowan and Jasmine grow closer without a fight, Lyra really did seem entirely indifferent.
Seeing her, Rowan's expression darkened slightly. He hadn't seen Lyra in six months, yet he barely reacted, offering nothing but a cold, dismissive glance.
Lucas, on the other hand, immediately jumped at the chance to mock her. "Lyra Fairchild, couldn't wait to run back and tattle to Mommy?"
Lyra didn't say a word. She just gave them a blank stare and kept walking.
Lucas blinked in surprise at her icy reaction. By the time Lyra slid into her car, Rowan had already walked into the mansion without looking back, completely unbothered by her presence. It was as if she didn't exist.
Lucas scratched his head and quickly hurried inside after Rowan.
Inside her car, Lyra tried turning the ignition twice, but the engine sputtered and died. She frowned in frustration.
