She had grabbed a random car from the family garage, only realizing it was a manual transmission once she was already on the road. She struggled with driving a stick shift, but figured since she managed to drive it here, she could drive it back.
As she tried the ignition for a third time, a sleek luxury car pulled up beside hers. Vivienne Jameson stepped out and marched straight toward Lyra's window.
She was Rowan’s aunt.
Seeing her, Lyra rolled down the glass. "Vivienne."
"It's you," Vivienne scoffed, her expression haughty. "Look at you. You can't even handle a car, and you think you can handle my nephew? Keep dreaming!"
Her words were sharp and dripping with condescension. Fortunately, the engine finally roared to life. Lyra let out a breath of relief and shifted into gear, but Vivienne stepped closer, blocking her path.
"I heard you spent the last six months abroad. Did you find a suitable match while you were there? If you did, you'd better hold onto him. Because Rowan is completely out of your league now."
Lyra understood exactly what Vivienne was getting at. She was terrified Lyra would keep pestering her nephew.
"You're right," Lyra nodded in agreement.
Vivienne paused, thrown off balance. Instead of bursting into tears, Lyra simply agreed with her. Frustrated that her insults hadn't landed, Vivienne pressed on.
"Good that you know your place. You and Rowan were never a match. He doesn't like brainless, materialistic heiresses like you. He's very close with Jasmine now, and you'd better not get in her way. Jasmine graduated with a Ph.D. from a top-tier university. She's not a superficial woman who only knows how to shop and eat. Rowan needs a true equal, an alliance of power."
In her past life, Vivienne had adored Jasmine. Her own daughter had idolized Jasmine as well, constantly defending her in front of Alistair Jameson.
Lyra tightened her grip on the steering wheel and replied with complete calm. "Vivienne, I have zero interest in getting involved with Rowan and Jasmine. In fact, if he officially calls off the engagement himself, I'd be thrilled. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to leave."
Vivienne let out a harsh scoff, absolutely refusing to believe a word of it. She thought Lyra was just putting on a pathetic act.
"Vivienne," Rowan greeted her smoothly.
Vivienne looked at him with fond affection. "Rowan, heading out for a date?"
He did have plans with Jasmine tonight. Before he could answer, Lucas chimed in, "Yep! A date with me."
Vivienne laughed. "You're such a menace, Lucas."
Victoria watched her son glance at his watch. She knew Rowan wouldn't bother changing into a fresh, tailored suit just to hang out with his buddies. He was definitely going to see that woman. She knew exactly what was happening, but couldn't bring herself to start an argument over it.
Lucas grinned, waving goodbye to the women as he and Rowan headed for the door.
In the end, Victoria said nothing.
