The next day was the weekend. With the cleaning crew meticulously scrubbing the house top to bottom, Lyra went to the local bookstore to read.
She was completely engrossed in her book when someone bumped hard into her elbow.
"Sorry!" a cold female voice snapped, lacking even a hint of apology.
Jasmine had come to pick up a few novels. Spotting Lyra tucked in a corner on the third floor with a thick academic text, she intentionally walked over.
"You're reading? Did I see that right, Lyra? There's no one around, who are you trying to impress? You should just stick to maxing out credit cards and shopping for designer bags. That suits you much better."
"Mind your own business," Lyra replied.
"You spent years following him around like a lost puppy, and suddenly you stop... and now you're pretending to be an intellectual. Pathetic."
Elara scoffed. "Jasmine, she's just a copycat. She's trying to be exactly like you."
Lyra hadn't expected to run into Jasmine here. She simply shifted to the side and ignored them.
But Jasmine wasn't about to drop it. "When are you returning the ring? If you had any common sense, you'd know it's incredibly desperate to hold onto the Jameson family ring like this, don't you think?"
Lyra let out a short laugh.
So this was what Rowan meant yesterday when he claimed Jasmine wouldn't care.
Lyra snapped her book shut. "I'm heading to the Jameson estate right now. Care to tag along?"
Jasmine's tone turned frigid. "Are you just showing off that you can visit Alistair, and I can't?"
"I figured you were so impatient that you'd want to snatch it up the very second I handed it back. Since you're so eager, we should just go together."
Jasmine was speechless.
Jasmine gritted her teeth. Realizing she wouldn't get the upper hand here, she spun around and stormed off.
Elara followed Jasmine for a few steps before jogging back to Lyra. "Jasmine and Rowan are going on a vacation to a private island, just the two of them. Who knows, maybe she'll come back pregnant."
Lyra had planned to ignore whatever came out of the girl's mouth, but at the mention of a pregnancy, she stiffened slightly.
Elara didn't miss the subtle shift in her expression.
Thinking she had finally hit a nerve, she practically gloated. "Aw, does that hurt your feelings? Well, it's too late for regrets now."
Convinced of her absolute victory, Elara trotted away with a smug smile.
Jasmine had headed toward the foreign literature section.
Having grown up reading classics and boasting flawless grades, she looked perfectly in her element standing among the towering shelves.
At that time, Lyra had just lost Caleb. She had wandered downstairs like a ghost, and Victoria had only stopped praising Finn when she noticed her standing there.
Later that day.
Lyra returned to a spotless house. Delilah was paying the cleaning staff, while Arthur was engrossed in the newspaper. She walked over and sat down right next to her father. "There is no time like the present. Let's return the ring today."
Arthur glanced at her over his paper. "Are you absolutely sure?"
Lyra nodded firmly.
"Let's go, then," Arthur said, rising to his feet and instructing the staff to retrieve the ring.
Right before leaving, Lyra received a call from Quentin.
It was an urgent work matter. She downloaded the email attachments, printed the documents, and planned to review them in the car.
Arthur was driving today, so Lyra settled into the backseat where the glare of the sun wouldn't hit her paperwork.
The drive was smooth. Just over an hour later, they pulled up to the Jameson estate.
The historic property was stunning and secluded, surrounded by swaying willows that reflected the sophisticated, impeccable taste of its owner.
