After work, Lyra pulled into the mall's underground garage. She flipped down her visor, reapplied her nude lipstick in the mirror, and stepped out.
Taking the glass elevator straight to the top floor, Lyra navigated the crowded room toward the window table Kayla had reserved. Suddenly, she stopped in her tracks.
Why were Victoria and Jasmine sitting there?
Victoria spotted Lyra at the same time. Rowan had invited his mother to dinner to celebrate Jasmine closing a multi-million dollar contract. What was Lyra doing here?
"Lyra, what are you doing here?" Victoria asked, her tone guarded. "Jasmine helped the Jameson Group win a massive bid today. Rowan is in a fantastic mood and brought us here to celebrate..."
Lyra offered a polite, hollow smile.
In her past life, Rowan had constantly fabricated achievements for Jasmine to force his family into accepting her.
This only cemented Lyra's suspicion about the night she saved his life. Rowan probably knew the truth deep down—he just desperately wanted his savior to be Jasmine.
"Lyra?" Victoria frowned, displeased by her lingering presence. Did she come here to cause a scene?
"Do you have any idea what you're doing? You claimed you were over my son. If you don't love Rowan anymore, why are you following him around? Lyra, the absolute worst trait a woman can have is being fickle and desperate."
Lyra opened her mouth to explain the misunderstanding, but her phone started ringing. It was Caleb.
"Where are you? Why aren't you here yet?"
"I'm at the table you mentioned, but you and Kayla aren't here," Lyra said flatly, keeping her eyes on Victoria.
"Oh, my bad!" Caleb realized. "I gave that table to Rowan. We're over at table two, on the east side."
"Got it. I'm on my way." Lyra spun around to leave and nearly crashed straight into Rowan, who was just returning from a phone call. He instinctively reached out and caught her arms to steady her.
When Caleb went to pay the check, the manager politely informed him that Mr. Jameson had already covered it.
Victoria had likely forced Rowan to foot the bill out of sheer guilt.
It was just a meal.
Lyra didn't give it a second thought.
Completely oblivious to the drama, Caleb laughed as they walked to the car. "Hey, we got a free dinner just for swapping tables. Not a bad deal!"
He and Kayla were in high spirits.
Not wanting to ruin their good mood, Lyra smiled and kept the rest of the story to herself.
