At six-thirty in the morning, just as the first light of dawn broke across the sky, Lyra woke up.
Yet, she didn't arrive at the office until nine-thirty. Lyra hurried into her workspace, nearly running straight into Caleb, who had clearly been waiting for her.
Caleb's gaze turned somber. He stared at her and asked, "You finished breakfast and left the house by seven. Why are you getting to the office so late? Be honest, where did you run off to this early in the morning?"
Lyra's eyes curved into a sweet smile as she handed over the coffee in her hand.
"Caleb, I just got up early to grab you a coffee on the way. Stop interrogating me."
Caleb didn't buy it. "You weren't out on a date with some guy, were you?"
"Who would go on a date with me at the crack of dawn?" Lyra said, exasperated. "Let's just get to work."
She booted up her computer and checked her emails, finding a new message from Zane Sutton. He wrote that his teaching assistant job would completely wrap up in just two months, and once all the paperwork was sorted, he would immediately pack up and head back home.
Lyra thought for a moment before typing her reply: *Got it. Focus on your work, and I'll focus on mine here. I can't wait to see you when you get back.*
By noon, Lyra didn't even bother grabbing lunch before heading to an entertainment company with Maddie, where they had some industry connections.
After locking down several dark-horse scripts that she knew were destined to become massive hits, she pulled Maddie in to co-invest.
Except, the studio they visited wasn't Jameson Entertainment, yet they somehow still managed to run into Josie Somerset.
From a distance, they saw Josie surrounded by a massive crowd, treated like absolute royalty. Dressed in flawless designer streetwear and sporting radiant makeup, she had her agent, assistants, and entourage following her every move, riding high on her soaring fame.
"She really is gorgeous," Maddie praised, grabbing Lyra's hand. "Let's go ask for an autograph."
"Don't do it!" Lyra had zero desire to see Josie. Maintaining a strict, all-business demeanor, she added, "We're here to invest, not to fangirl. Let's go."
Maddie had no choice but to drop it.
The two of them grabbed lunch and chatted for a bit before Maddie suddenly leaned in, her eyes gleaming with gossip as she lowered her voice. "Oh, by the way, I've got some insane news for you!"
But then again, maybe it wouldn't have mattered.
After all, Rowan had probably loved Jasmine all along.
...
Over at the Ford residence, the entire family was taking turns trying to talk Jasmine out of the upcoming car race, with every argument revolving around the engagement and protecting the family's reputation.
"Jasmine, the most important thing right now is your engagement. You're getting engaged to Rowan in half a month. What if something happens to you out on that track?"
Her father set down his financial newspaper. "You're a young woman about to secure your status and join the Jameson family. Running off to the race track every day and risking getting all bruised up—how does that look to the public? Where does that leave the dignity of both our families? Just drop out of this race."
"Lyra signed up, and there's no way I'm losing to her."
"It might just be a trap she set up to ruin your engagement," Tabitha warned cautiously. "If you get into an accident on the track, the wedding will be called off. Why insist on taking such a massive risk?"
