Josie immediately asked, confused, "It doesn't matter?"
"No."
Rowan replied with a single word and hung up, pulling the car into traffic.
...
Jonathan Ford was finally out of prison. He had thrown mountains of cash at their former clients, practically begging for their forgiveness just to secure his probation.
Grandma Ford was already waiting at home. Seeing him, her eyes reddened, but she didn't say much. She simply had a maid bring out a freshly poured glass of strong bourbon.
"Drink up. Wash away the bad luck, and smooth sailing from here on out."
Jonathan swallowed the liquor in grim silence. The burn slid down his throat, but he barely felt it. All he could feel was the crushing weight of Ford Enterprises' mess pressing down on his chest.
They had already let all the household staff go. The company was at a complete standstill, and their business partners were pulling out left and right.
In the dining room, Tabitha looked at her exhausted husband, her expression utterly bleak.
Jasmine didn't even say hello to him.
It was Finn who had gone to pick him up, stepping in from behind to say, "Let's just let Dad eat first."
Jonathan sat down heavily. "Invite Rowan over for dinner tomorrow."
"We need to ask him what our next move should be."
He knew perfectly well this would put his daughter in a terrible position.
But right now, in all of Seaborne City, Rowan Jameson was the only man with the power and ruthlessness to drag Ford Enterprises out of the grave. He was the family's last lifeline.
