Chapter 28
Victoria was in low spirits. Lyra’s sudden outburst about having feelings for Caspian had genuinely startled her.
But her husband had assured her it was just the angry ramblings of an upset girl and shouldn’t be taken seriously.
Victoria agreed.
Lyra had always been straightforward and pure-hearted-traits that made her perfect for the Jameson family.
So, Victoria decided to forgive her this once.
“Lyra, with the holidays coming up, all the house staff have gone back to their hometowns. But Rowan needs this file, and I just couldn’t find anyone else to deliver it.”
Lyra paused.
She honestly couldn’t tell if this was one of Victoria’s schemes to push her and Rowan together, or a genuine request for help.
She was about to decline when Victoria added, “You know I was in a car accident, Lyra. My husband strictly forbade me from driving, and this document is absolutely crucial to the Jameson family.”
Lyra hesitated.
With Victoria phrasing it like that, refusing would seem incredibly rude.
The file was secured in a thick yellow envelope.
Taking it, Lyra promised, “I’ll make sure Rowan gets it as soon as possible.”
Victoria smiled warmly. “Thank you. You’re a lifesaver.”
Lyra drove straight to the Jameson Group headquarters.
She hadn’t been here in a long time. The receptionist recognized her instantly, knowing exactly who
she was here to see.
Miss Fairchild used to visit the CEO’s office all the time.
But lately, rumors had been swirling around the office that the CEO had a new girlfriend-a refined, scholarly woman named Jasmine.
For a moment, the receptionist didn’t know whether to let Lyra through or not.
Sensing her hesitation, Lyra clarified, “I’m just here on behalf of Victoria to drop off a file. I’ll be leaving right after.”
Hearing that it was an errand for the boss’s mother, the receptionist breathed a sigh of relief and let her through.
Lyra stepped into the elevator. It stopped on the fifth floor, and a group of employees filed in, chattering excitedly.
“Exactly how amazing is this Jasmine girl to actually lock down the CEO?”
“She came to the office the other day and took his private elevator. You guys missed it… she’s got this innocent yet seductive vibe, absolutely drop-dead gorgeous.”
“Hmm,” Rowan murmured, taking the file and carelessly tossing it into a drawer without so much as a glance before returning to his work.
Judging by his reaction, the document wasn’t urgent at all.
He possessed an inherently detached demeanor. Even when someone was doing him a favor, he was too cold to even offer a smile.
Rowan hadn’t yet developed the mature, steady restraint he would possess years down the line; he was still dripping with pure arrogance.
Lyra genuinely couldn’t fathom how she had been so hysterically obsessed with him in her past life.
She used to think he was the most handsome man in the world.
“Anything else?” Rowan asked, looking up again.
It was a clear dismissal.
Snapping back to reality, Lyra replied, “No.”
Clearly, he didn’t want anyone getting the wrong idea.
She hadn’t even been standing there for three seconds, and he was already telling her to get out.
If that was how he wanted to play it, Lyra had no desire to stick around either. She took a step back and turned toward the door.
Just then, the office door swung wide open, and Lucas’s voice boomed before he even fully entered the room. “Rowan! Jasmine just picked out a-”
