Chapter 29
Lucas cut himself off as the group walking in suddenly spotted Lyra, their faces morphing into absolute disbelief.
“What are you doing here?” Lucas demanded.
“What, did you finally get over your little tantrum? You’re back?”
Lucas sneered in disgust. “I knew it. You spent over a decade throwing yourself at Rowan, there was
no way you’d just stop. Look at you, coming crawling right back.”
Lucas was always eager to throw an insult, but Waylon remained silent.
Jasmine’s expression was unreadable, though she was clearly thinking the exact same thing.
Why was Lyra back in front of Rowan?
Had she changed her mind?
Jasmine suspected Lyra had never actually given up on him!
Lyra’s voice was ice-cold. “Lucas, just looking at you is an eyesore.”
With that, she turned to leave.
“Lyra, why don’t you join us for lunch?” Jasmine suddenly grabbed her arm, putting on a sickeningly friendly face. “We haven’t hung out in forever. Let’s all eat together today. Lucas and the guys were just helping me pick out a car, so the timing is perfect. It’s my treat.”
Lyra stared at Jasmine.
Everyone had been talking about how close Jasmine had gotten with Lucas and Waylon.
Seeing it with her own eyes confirmed it.
Lyra let out a dry laugh and brushed her hand away. “No thanks.”
Seeing her cold attitude, Lucas frowned. “It’s lunchtime anyway, and everyone needs to eat. What exactly are you afraid of, Lyra?”
Lucas secretly felt that life without Lyra around to torment was a bit boring.
He even turned to Rowan for backup. “Right, Rowan?”
“Yeah,” Rowan replied, standing up as he reached a natural stopping point in his work. He grabbed the suit jacket draped over his chair, throwing it over his arm as he stepped out from behind the desk.
But Lyra didn’t say a single word and walked right out the door.
She took the elevator down to the first floor.
By the time she reached the lobby, Rowan and Jasmine were somehow already walking ahead of her.
It made sense. Lyra had taken the employee elevator, which stopped constantly to let people on and off. It ate up a chunk of time just getting down. They had taken the CEO’s private elevator, a straight shot with zero interruptions.
The CEO’s private elevator.
At the table, Rowan smoothly placed a choice cut of meat onto Jasmine’s plate.
Waylon watched them and teased, “Who would’ve thought the great Rowan Jameson would ever serve someone else?”
The comment sent a rush of warmth through Jasmine’s chest, her cheeks flushing a deep red.
That night, Lucas called Lyra, acting like he was playing some sort of prank. “Lyra, Rowan needs the Eastside Development Project from your family. Bring the documents over right now!”
Lyra listened with a frown, then hung up.
In her past life, she would have obediently done exactly what he said. Even knowing his friends were just goading her, she would have forced her parents to hand over the project and dutifully delivered it
to Rowan.
She knew Rowan hadn’t asked for it-he purposefully avoided asking her for anything to keep his distance.
But even knowing that, she had been more than happy to do it.
Now, having lived through it once, Lyra saw right through the bullshit.
After hanging up, she casually blocked Lucas’s number.
Lucas was speechless.
Lucas was sitting alone in his car; Rowan wasn’t even with him. He had only made the call to mess with Lyra, fully expecting her to come running like a desperate puppy. Getting hung on didn’t bother him. He tossed his phone onto the passenger seat and slammed the gas pedal, speeding off. “Let’s see how long you can keep this act up!”
