The next day, Zane mentioned he wasn't familiar with Seaborne City. He asked if Lyra would mind showing him around as a friend.
Lyra agreed. She spent the entire day taking him to various landmarks, walking from the morning mist straight through to the golden sunset. Along the way, Zane bought her a pair of comfortable flats. They weren't overly expensive, but they fit perfectly. Lyra loved them.
The only cloud over the day was knowing Zane was starting at Jameson Tech the next morning. It completely ruined her mood, even though she knew she had no right to dictate his career choices. Her feelings were a complicated mess.
As they drove back, Lyra prepared to drop him off at his lakeside apartment.
"Change of plans," Zane said with a smile. "The company suddenly relocated me to a luxury penthouse near the office. My new boss is surprisingly generous!"
"So the old place is empty?" Lyra asked, realizing all her hard work cleaning it a few days ago had been for nothing.
"Rowan said he'd be staying there."
Lyra's foot slammed onto the brake pedal. The car jerked violently, tires screeching against the asphalt. Thankfully, the road behind them was empty.
Zane looked over in alarm. "What's wrong?"
Were there hidden cameras in that apartment? The memory of the embarrassing things she had blurted out to herself in that empty space washed over her, draining the color from her face. She forced a strained shake of her head. "Nothing. I'm fine."
The apartment looked like it was maintained monthly but hadn't been lived in for a long time. Surely there wouldn't be cameras. She couldn't afford to obsess over it. After dropping Zane off at his new penthouse, she drove straight home.
As she neared the Fairchild estate, she spotted Rowan's Bugatti parked out front—the exact same car she had crashed into, still unrepaired. Panic seized her chest. Instead of turning into her driveway, Lyra kept her foot on the gas and drove right past her own house.
Secretary Wesley Wade watched the entire thing from the driver's seat of the Bugatti. He sat up straighter, bewildered. His boss was waiting inside the house for her, and she just drove away? He couldn't wrap his head around how drastically Lyra had changed from the girl who used to chase Rowan relentlessly.
