In the middle of the night, Lyra was trapped in a suffocating nightmare. She dreamt she was heavily pregnant, plummeting from a terrifying height. She screamed, jolting upright in bed. She was drenched in a cold sweat, her heart hammering so violently against her ribs that it took minutes to catch her breath.
Caleb had been up for a glass of water and heard her scream. He pushed the door open. "Lyra? Did you have a nightmare?"
He reached out to wipe the sweat from her forehead, but she grabbed his hand, her voice trembling with lingering terror. "Caleb, please. Stop doing business with Rowan. I'm begging you."
"I just had a nightmare," she gasped. "Dad died. Mom lost her mind. And you... you were only sleeping two hours a night, working yourself to death, completely ignoring Kayla while she was pregnant. And then... then I died too."
Rowan had a hundred ways to destroy them, and he would do it without leaving a single trace.
Seeing his sister's pale face and desperate expression, Caleb sighed. "It was just a dream, Lyra."
"Caleb, Fairchild Holdings is doing fine. Let's just hold off on taking new projects for now, okay? The twins are due in two months. You should be spending your time taking care of Kayla. Don't leave with regrets."
Caleb gently patted her shoulder. "Go to sleep. I'll call Rowan tomorrow and turn down the partnership."
"Do you promise?"
"I promise."
"And don't let him come to our house anymore, okay?"
"Okay."
With Caleb's promise, the tension finally drained from Lyra's body. She curled back under the covers, finally finding a sliver of peace.
The next morning, Caleb called Rowan from his office.
Rowan picked up almost immediately.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Jameson. Your terms are incredibly generous, and I appreciate your sincerity, but... unfortunately, we have to pass on the partnership. My sister is completely against it. It's gotten to the point where she's having nightmares every night and can't sleep. As her brother, business has to take a back seat. I can't watch her suffer like this."
