But Leo knew Rowan wasn't doing this for him.
He was doing this for his future...
Leo's brain suddenly short-circuited.
Could Lyra really become Mrs. Jameson?
Rowan had always preferred brilliantly calculated, ruthlessly smart women.
Alright, maybe he was getting way ahead of himself.
...
Meanwhile, Lyra was walking out of a high-end maternity boutique.
Without realizing it, she had bought a mountain of baby supplies.
Just as she turned toward the elevators to head down to the parking garage, she found herself face-to-face with Mrs. Chavez.
Seeing Lyra, Mrs. Chavez's face instantly darkened, her eyes boiling with undisguised venom.
Her son had been forced into exile, trapped in some miserable rural town, all because of this woman.
Even though Mrs. Chavez had fabricated excuses—illnesses, birthdays, wanting to meet his new girlfriend—to summon Lucas back to the city, Silas Chavez always had him swiftly banished again.
"Are you feeling incredibly proud of yourself, Lyra?" Mrs. Chavez's voice was sharp and vicious.
"Wasn't stringing along both of the Jameson brothers enough for you? Did you really have to ruin Lucas too?"
"If it weren't for you, why would my son be driven out of his own home, suffering out in the middle of nowhere?"
Lyra's expression turned rigid. "That has absolutely nothing to do with me."
Mrs. Chavez completely ignored her defense, plowing forward relentlessly.
"Even if Lucas drags some random country girl back from that godforsaken place, our family won't say a single word to stop him. All I ask is that you spare him. Give him a way out."
Lyra met her furious glare evenly. "You don't need to worry, Mrs. Chavez. Nothing will ever happen between Lucas and me. I have never had any feelings for him."
Hearing this, Mrs. Chavez's hands balled into tight fists.
Her proud, aristocratic son had been so utterly bewitched by Lyra that he had desperately begged to marry her. Silas had explicitly warned that Lyra's entanglement with the Jameson brothers was dangerously complicated. He refused to let Lucas's obsession ruin his life and drag the Chavez family down with him.
Mrs. Chavez forced the words through her teeth. "Good. Very good."
