Chapter 33

“It’s fake.”

Over lunch, Lyra laid everything out for Madeline.

Her relationship with Caspian was nothing but a convenient shield to fend off the marriage pressures from both their families.

Madeline finally understood, though she gritted her teeth in frustration. Even if it was fake, she couldn’t stand the thought of Caspian standing next to Lyra. They just didn’t match.

“Caspian isn’t right for you. Make sure you don’t actually fall for him.”

Madeline then scoffed, “Jasmine sure knows how to pick them, though. Rowan is obviously the cream of the crop in that circle. If I were you, I would have seriously slapped her back there. You’ve changed, Lyra-”

“Since when do you give up so easily?!”

Lyra froze for a second.

In her past life, she hadn’t given up. Her suffocating possessiveness over Rowan had ultimately led to her family’s complete destruction.

She pressed her lips together and said, “What else can I do? I can’t exactly declare open war on

them.”

“You could always go to Mr. Jameson… He adores you…” Madeline felt that Alistair was the only person on earth who could force Rowan to marry Lyra.

Lyra shook her head. “No. Forcing something like that won’t ever lead to happiness.”

“Anyway, I don’t want to hear another word about Rowan.”

“Fine…” Madeline figured this was their last meal together before the holidays. She wanted to keep the mood light, so she dropped the miserable topic.

Just then, Lyra’s phone pinged. She glanced at the screen, her expression turning thoughtful.

Fairchild Holdings was officially closed for the holidays.

Lyra walked into the corporate building. The usually bustling headquarters felt vast and hollow, the silence so profound that her footsteps echoed across the floor.

Reaching the accounting department, she pulled out a ring of keys, testing them one by one until the lock finally clicked. She stepped inside.

Lyra waited in silence for ten minutes.

The doorknob turned, and a young woman rushed in, looking flustered. “I’m so sorry, Miss Fairchild. The traffic was terrible.”

“I’m the one who should be apologizing for dragging you in at a time like this.” Lyra extended a hand to

She neatly arranged the towering piles of financial records on the desk.

Lyra booted up the computer and accessed the digital ledgers.

In her previous life, Jasmine had once taunted her: “Rowan came up with at least ten different ways to destroy Fairchild Holdings, but your family completely collapsed before he even had to use the fifth one. I don’t know whether to applaud his genius or laugh at how fragile your family was!”

Reborn into this second chance, Lyra refused to let Rowan tear them apart again. She was going to rip the cancer out of Fairchild Holdings by the roots.

With the holidays looming, Lyra locked herself in the office and audited the books for two straight days, barely sleeping.

Over those forty-eight hours, her phone buzzed endlessly with holiday greetings, all of which she ignored.

Some old college friends invited her out to party, but she fired off a quick excuse and declined.

Just as she had suspected, the executives she wanted to terminate were filthy. Some had doctored expense reports, others had manipulated supplier contracts, and a few had even siphoned off client entertainment budgets for themselves.

Lyra barely shut her eyes, working herself to the bone.

By the third day, the bulk of the audit was complete. She rubbed her temples, exhausted, and began packing up.

She took photos of the damning evidence and carefully returned the original invoices exactly where they belonged.
