Chapter 51
“Caleb, Dad is here-”
The hall doors swung open, and Arthur Fairchild stood silhouetted against the light. The crowd, seeing the chairman fresh off his flight from abroad, erupted like they had found their savior, talking over each other to complain about Caleb and Lyra.
Seraphina Sterling’s eyes were red. She collapsed onto the floor, her voice trembling. “Mr. Fairchild, my mom was arrested. Please, you have to get her out.”
Delilah Fairchild hurried over with the housekeeper to help her up, shooting a reprimanding look at her daughter.
Arthur didn’t recognize the sobbing girl. Someone chimed in, “She’s Fiona’s daughter.”
Arthur nodded slowly. Dusting off his travel fatigue, he shrugged out of his coat and said, “Everyone,
take a seat…”
He added gently to Seraphina, “Take a breath and sit down. Tell me what happened.”
He didn’t even glance at Caleb and Lyra.
The previously silenced crowd immediately piped up. “Chairman Fairchild, you’re finally here.”
“Arthur, my husband has been with you for years! He’s worked his fingers to the bone! Caleb just fired everyone out of nowhere. You have to step in!”
“Arthur, my daughter is still locked up at the police station.”
Arthur offered a few soothing words, then immediately called the precinct to get Fiona released.
Seraphina and her grandmother threw a smug, triumphant glare at Lyra.
At this point.
A chilling wave of disappointment washed over Lyra.
She glanced at Caleb. He had already texted their father photos of the fake invoices and kickback evidence hours ago.
The company was a titan in Seaborne City. Arthur had never once entertained the thought of its downfall. He just planned to step back and let Caleb take the reins after he got married.
“If you keep letting them walk all over you, we will! You can’t just assume the company will thrive forever. There’s a reason they say wealth doesn’t last three generations. I can already see it falling apart…” Lyra shuddered. These weren’t just fears; they were the visceral memories of her past life. “What do you think will happen to us if the company goes under?”
“This company is Grandpa’s life’s work. It’s yours, and it will be Caleb’s. You might not see the damage these parasites are doing right now, but if it all crashes down on Caleb’s watch, how is he supposed to survive that?”
“If Fairchild Holdings is destroyed while he’s in charge, have you even thought about what that would do to him?”
She had literally watched their empire crumble to dust.
In her past life, the stock had plummeted, partners had pulled their investments, and the company was sold off for scraps. Millions of dollars worth of equipment had been auctioned away like junk.
Caleb had clung to that junk, desperately trying to rebuild from scratch like their grandfather had. But the era had changed. Without the momentum of a booming market, all of his frantic efforts had been in vain.
