Chapter 53
Chapter 53
Lyra knew that the Jamesons and Fairchilds still had an active engagement. Rowan’s sudden display of “concern” was either ordered by Alistair Jameson or pushed by Charles. He certainly hadn’t come on his own accord.
She hit the nail right on the head.
After Rowan returned home, Victoria Jameson had caught wind of the drama but lacked the details. The moment he walked in, she asked, “What’s all this commotion over at the Fairchilds?”
“They let a few people go.”
Victoria frowned. “That’s it?”
Rowan gave a quiet, indifferent hum of confirmation.
Without another word, he headed upstairs.
Victoria gritted her teeth, muttering to the butler. “I wonder if he acts this cold in front of that woman too. He barely strings two words together.”
The butler chuckled politely. “That’s just how the young master is.”
He handed her a cup of tea. Victoria took a sip, suddenly struck by a morbid curiosity about Jasmine
Ford.
After all, she was the first woman Rowan had shown genuine interest in for years.
She had casually probed Lucas Chavez about her before, only to be told that the girl was exceptional.
Truly exceptional.
Rowan grabbed a change of clothes and hit the shower. By the time he was out, it was pitch black outside, the clock striking eleven.
He read in bed for a while before turning in.
But that night, sleep evaded him.
His mind felt cluttered with chaotic shadows, yet completely empty at the same time.
He plunged into a pitch-black dream. The darkness was suffocating, thick and absolute, void of a single sliver of light.
He sat dead center in the pitch-black room, entirely motionless.
Frozen in place.
When his alarm buzzed at six the next morning, Rowan’s eyes snapped open. He felt no lingering dread-just profound boredom.
The nightmare didn’t shake him for long.
He went through his usual routine: a morning run, a shower, and heading straight to the office.

Shortly after, Jasmine left her apartment. Wrapped in a beige trench coat, she picked up two coffees on her way and arrived at the Jameson Group by seven-thirty.
Rowan had buried himself in work the moment he walked in. It wasn’t long before Lucas showed up.
He barged into Rowan’s office, exclaiming, “Did you hear? Day one back at the grind, and Fairchild Holdings is a total war zone.”
Jasmine, who was thoughtfully setting a coffee mug down next to Rowan, paused.
Waylon Grayson had trailed in behind Lucas. He added, “A massive layoff. They purged everyone involved in embezzlement. The siblings went behind Arthur’s back and axed nearly twenty veteran employees.”
Having been right in the middle of it, Rowan was far more informed than they were. He didn’t need the
recap.
Lucas read his unbothered expression. “That little brat has no idea what she’s doing. She’s been there for five minutes and already flipped the whole place upside down. Is she trying to work, or is she just there to start fires? The whole company is in sheer chaos.”
“I bet Arthur is popping aspirin by the handful. He never could say no to her…”
Jasmine offered a polite smile.
She wasn’t surprised. Lyra had been an academic disaster in school; there was zero reason to expect her to be competent in the corporate world.
Still, Jasmine couldn’t help but envy how wildly Arthur spoiled his daughter. She had been to the Fairchild estate a few times and seen it firsthand. That endless pampering was exactly why Lyra was so insufferably entitled and couldn’t handle the slightest pushback.
If even her fiercely loyal father was getting a headache over her antics, then Lyra truly was a useless
corporate pawn.
Jasmine kept these thoughts to herself. Badmouthing a former friend felt crass and petty, so she stayed silent.
She didn’t say a word.
She simply glanced at Rowan. He looked completely indifferent.
It seemed he couldn’t care less about the drama.
A secret thrill of delight bloomed in Jasmine’s chest.
Waylon continued, “Word is, they found the cooked books. You have to cut out the dead weight eventually.”
“Caleb is usually so indecisive. It’s nice to see him finally grow a spine.”
“It was definitely all Caleb’s doing,” Lucas scoffed. “Lyra doesn’t know a damn thing. She’s just standing behind her brother, cheering him on like a glorified mascot.”
Lucas refused to believe Lyra was actually useful.
Jasmine silently agreed.

“What do you think, Rowan?”
Rowan pinched the bridge of his nose.
Before he could answer, the room noticed he was looking noticeably grim.
“You good, man? You look awful.”
Jasmine peered at him. Seeing his somber expression, her heart dropped.
Was he worried about Lyra?
“Is everything okay?” Jasmine asked softly, masking her internal panic with a sweet smile.
