Chapter 55
Chapter 55
When the holiday gala rolled around, Silas Chavez hosted a lavish banquet, inviting half the elite of Seaborne City.
The Chavez estate was buzzing with life, decked out in brilliant lighting. Alistair Jameson had skipped the event due to a prior commitment with an old comrade, and Charles and Victoria had stayed behind to keep him company.
Rowan, naturally attending as Lucas’s close friend, made an appearance.
Under the grand chandeliers, Rowan, Lucas, and Waylon were seated at the head table alongside Silas, Waylon’s parents, and Arthur and Delilah.
Lyra, Maddie Vance, and several impeccably dressed socialites were relegated to an adjacent
circular table.
The other women, presumably younger Chavez relatives, kept stealing hungry glances at Rowan and Waylon, whispering eagerly amongst themselves.
“Look, that’s Rowan Jameson… He is insanely gorgeous. I’m literally swooning.”
“The guy next to him isn’t bad either.”
Maddie rolled her eyes.
“Rowan and his crew are at the grown-up table. We’re at the kids’ table,” Maddie muttered to Lyra.
Lyra nodded in agreement. There weren’t any actual teenagers here, but the social hierarchy was painfully obvious.
Across the room, Silas instructed Leo Chavez to look after the girls, essentially banishing him to their
table.
“So, they just stick all the useless people at one table?” Maddie quipped as Leo dragged his feet over.
Leo unfortunately caught her comment. His face twitched. “Very funny.”
It made sense for Maddie and Lyra. Even though Lyra had graduated, the older generation still saw them as fresh-faced college students.
But Leo…
Leo awkwardly pulled out the chair next to Lyra. He was twenty-seven, but since he hadn’t achieved anything noteworthy in business, his grandfather routinely grouped him with the young socialites.
“There weren’t any seats left over there. Guess I’m stuck with you guys,” he deflected.
The head table was indeed packed.
Lyra glanced over and saw Silas glowing with excitement as he poured Rowan a glass of wine. It was glaringly obvious how much the old man favored him.
“I swear, if Silas had granddaughters instead of grandsons, he’d be shoving them down Rowan’s throat,” Maddie whispered.

“Maybe I should transition then,” Leo shot back dryly.
A distant cousin across the table snorted with laughter.
The burst of noise drew the attention of the head table. Rowan and Lucas both turned to look.
Lyra locked eyes with Rowan from across the room. She immediately snapped her gaze away to avoid giving anyone the wrong idea.
But Lucas completely misinterpreted it.
“Lyra is staring at you again. Just like old times,” Lucas leaned in and muttered to Rowan.
Rowan acted as if he hadn’t heard a word, instantly turning to engage in conversation with Silas on his right.
When Lucas checked again, Lyra was actively chatting with Leo, a faint, genuine smile playing on her lips.
Leo was the same age as Lucas, but his track record was pitiful in comparison. Silas was thrilled with Lucas’s sharp business acumen, but as for Leo…
“Leo, are you looking to make some real money?” Lyra was asking him.
“Who hates money?” Leo took a sullen swig of his drink.
“Want to get in on something with me?”
Leo eyed her with blatant skepticism. “You?”
Lyra nodded confidently.
“Pass.”
Lyra fully expected the rejection. Unbothered, she continued, “Suit yourself. But whatever you do, do not invest in the used car market right now.”
The idiot had heard some rumor about the used car boom and was planning to dive in headfirst. It had forced her to stay up half the night photoshopping a fake weather report. If it weren’t for her heavy concealer, her dark circles would be on full display.
She fished her phone out of her pocket, opened her photo gallery, and pulled up the edited screenshot. “Look. Even the news is predicting massive hail next month. I wouldn’t lie to you.”
Leo leaned in and checked the screen. She wasn’t kidding.
The headline clearly warned of severe hailstorms hitting their region next month. If he stocked up on inventory and left the cars in an open lot without heavy insurance, he would take a catastrophic financial hit.
He leaned closer to get a better look, but Lyra flashed him a secretive smile, locked the screen, and slipped the phone right back into her coat pocket.
