In truth, Lyra knew that her own choices in her past life had been the fatal blow that shattered her mother's sanity.
"Mom, I promise my personal feelings won't impact the partnership with the Jameson Group. I'm just a little jet-lagged today. I'm going to get some rest."
"Of course, of course," Delilah said quickly, noticing the deep exhaustion in her daughter's eyes. She dropped the subject entirely and urged Lyra upstairs.
Lyra unpacked her bags, took a hot shower, and crashed into bed. She slept deeply, without a single dream.
When she woke the next morning, she went straight looking for Caleb. He had gotten home long after she had fallen asleep the night before. She found him in his bedroom, struggling to tie his necktie with one hand while scrolling through his phone with the other.
Lyra leaned against the doorframe, watching him fumble for a moment before stepping inside. "Let me help you with that, Caleb."
Caleb's eyes lit up at the sight of his sister, a warm smile spreading across his face. "Sure. Go for it."
"You really need to learn how to do this properly. When you get married..."
Before he could even finish his sentence, Lyra had efficiently knotted the silk tie perfectly against his collar.
"You know how to tie a men's tie?" Caleb asked, genuinely surprised.
Lyra was too used to it. In her past life, she had obsessively tied Rowan's ties, ironed his suits, laid out his clothes... she had desperately played the role of the perfect, subservient wife, only for Rowan to coldly ignore her efforts.
Lyra patted Caleb's broad shoulders, forcing a light laugh. "It's easy."
Caleb chuckled, adjusting his collar.
"How are things with Kayla?" Lyra asked, remembering the sad look on Kayla's face at the mall. "I was gone for months."
"We're good."
Lyra playfully yanked his tie in frustration. Caleb looked down at her irritated expression, his eyes crinkling with exasperated affection as a soft laugh rumbled in his chest. "Worry about your own dates, Lyra..."
The siblings walked downstairs together and headed into the dining room for breakfast. Arthur joined them shortly after, looking particularly thrilled to see Lyra.
They chatted excitedly about the company's two flagship projects, both of which were advancing flawlessly.
"Dad, when are we going to invite Kayla over for dinner? Everyone is free this weekend, we should..." Lyra simply couldn't shake the image of Kayla's lonely, insecure expression.
She forcibly steered the conversation back to the relationship. In her past life, Kayla's formal introduction to the family had happened right around this time, followed shortly by wedding negotiations.
"There's no rush on that," Arthur said, waving a hand. "At the gala, Mr. Ward pulled me aside to ask if Caleb's relationship was finalized. I think he's looking to introduce his daughter."
Lyra felt the blood drain from her face.
