“Did you just say I should let that bitch in.” I swear under my breath, then glance at my wife. “Pardon my French.”
“Oh, please don’t hold out.” Jennifer gives me that eye roll that says she’s seen me do much worse than curse and turns back to Baxter.
“You said Reign contacted you? Where?”
Baxter’s eyes drop to his feet and it’s less like the golden boy who used to strut around this house.
“I was trying to sell my car. Needed some money. He was buying cars at that destination and decided to tell me. Looks like he was gonna find me anyway.” His voice rises. “Do you guys hear what I said?”
“I heard.” Jennifer says. “But I also remember Reign being right behind his father when the whole entourage stopped us just a week ago.”
“Elio, get me a cigarette.”
“You’ve had one already.” Jennifer fixes me with a look that could stop traffic.
I wave Elio off.
Baxter digs his hands into his hair and frustration radiates off him in waves. He can’t understand why I’m not taking this seriously. But it’s hard to take anything seriously when it’s about the bitch who threatened me what her dad would do to Jennifer and her damn brother….who was part of that ambush.
“Do you not care for Jennifer!?” Baxter yells at me.
“What the fuck-‘
“You’re the one who got her into this mess with your evil girlfriend from the fucking past!”
“Excuse me!?”
Baxter steps closer like he’s got something to prove but that’s big mistake.
“Think again, because if I remember correctly, Reign was the one who got hands on your fucking marriage contract! You invited him to your wedding along with his sister because you don’t have any critical thinking. Didn’t he make friends with you in Italy back when you were at the process of buying a car too?”
Baxter’s face goes blank. Processing. Remembering.
“Oh look at that.” I roll my eyes now with a curse word. “Reign just keeps using the same tactic on you. You know what, I’m done with this conversation and I’m going to take a shower. You’re welcome to come back home cause I actually have a job for you at the company. But if you’re gonna continue this bullshit talk, then please leave.”
I walk past Jennifer.
My bedroom is quiet when I close the door. I pull my shirt over my head and toss it somewhere. I’m pissed: And not the kind of pissed that fades with a deep breath. The kind that sits in your chest and burns.
Baxter doesn’t fucking learn. Might be because he grew up silver spoon fed, never had to fight for anything in his life. I’ve known that already. But what I hate is the fact that they use him as bait and he keeps taking it. Over and over again.
The problem now is I’m not the only one I have to take care of. have to take care of every single person

wife. My sister. Baxter himself. Winny. My friends. Because Dons like Moretti don’t just go after the person who wronged them. They go after everyone connected. The casino. My workers. All of it. So imagine how many eyes I have to have around to make sure no one gets hurt. And Baxter is out here bringing the danger right to our door.
I step into the shower, naked, and turn the water as hot as it goes. It pounds against my shoulders, steam rising around me. I stand there for a long moment, letting it beat into my muscles, trying to wash away the tension that’s been living in my bones since that bullet grazed my arm.
Let Jenna in here? Stupid. What do I look like letting an obsessive thing like her anywhere near Jennifer? Does Baxter have any idea the things she could say to Jennifer? Things that would but fear in her, make her look at me different, make her question everything. I’m trying to keep her out of all of this, and Baxter goes and brings Jenn.
I just became Jennifer’s husband. We’re trying to plan a wedding And just like that, I could become a bad husband almost immediately.
I lather soap over my head, scrub like I’m trying to get the mess of everything out of my brain. The water rinses down as I scrub under my arms, down my chest, over the tattooed skin. For the next few minutes, I let the water beat against my skin, washing the soap away until I hear my name again.
“Harvey?”
I turn.
Jennifer is standing in the doorway and light from the bedroom frames her silhouette. She picks a towel from the marble counter, and I turn off the shower. She tosses it toward me.
I catch it one-handed and wrap it around my waist.
This girl is twisting her hands together like she doesn’t know what to say.
“I think…” Her bright eyes look up at me. “I think we should hear what she has to say.”
I stop staring at those cute eyes and let my
face go
blank.
“I’m tired. I wanna take a nap.” I walk away from the bathroom to my closet, and I hear her following behind me.
“Harvey?”
“I’m serious. I’m tired.” I grab a grey t-shirt from the rows of perfectly folded clothes and pull it over my head.
“Let’s just hear what she has to say-”
“She has nothing smart to say. I promise you, I know Jenna. You already knew she pretended to be friends with you just so your heart would break more when you found out about me and her in the past. Someone who would do that is not sane.”
“And I agree. I’m not saying she is sane-”
“And let’s not forget she flew in to New York, rented the same building as you-”
“And came to Delcaire for a dress. Yes, I know she did all of that. Jennifer steps closer. “But it wasn’t for me. It was for you.”
I stop with
my hand on the hem of my shirt and raise my eyes at her.
“Don’t look at me that way, Harvey. Jenna is in love with you. So if she’s here, it’s because she’s worried about you. She’s worried that something is really about to happen to you. And if he sent Reign to tell Baxter in the first place, then it makes sense. Because her brother really does all the dirty work for her
I stare at her for a long moment. Then I go back to putting on the rest of my clothes.
