From ground floor to top, it’s full of my relatives who heard the fews and decided to swarm the whole place like bees. My dad’s siblings. Marcus with his greedy eyes, Patricia who’s been waiting for a payout since before I was born. Lorraine who married into money and still wants more. Every relative and even those who don’t particularly have our name are here,
Then we have the shareholders…Mr. Harrison from the board wo’s been sucking up to anyone suckable. Mrs. Chen who only cares about quarterly profits, old stone Whitmore who’s be with Prescott Holdings since my grandfather’s time and thinks he owns the place.
They’re all here as if the hospital counts as a press conference. I was heir already, I would have the authority to restrict them. Now they have the right to stand around with their sad faces and ask who will replace dad since he’s unconscious.
Damn doctor said it’s touch and go…could wake up tomorrow of in months…no on knows anything
At top floor, I see reporters from every news channel. Their van their cameras and their shit-stirring attention. I can even hear the shuffling of a helicopter overhead as I blow out the cigalette smoke from my lips in frustration.
I haven’t even had time to think about what I’m going to tell the vestors, the fucking lawyers that are going to stand in front of me in the next fifteen minutes to question me if I knew he extremities of what not being “married” has caused.
My guts haven’t been able to understand what I feel about the of man being in the hospital. A heart attack? I wasn’t expecting it and now there is a funny pain in my chest.
Soon enough, my phone starts buzzing in my pocket and I groa
“What!” I yell into the phone.
“Jennifer’s here. I just saw her outside amidst the sea of reporters Bringing her through the back door-”
“What!?” I pinch the bridge of my nose. “Take her the fuck away from here!”
“Yeah, you think she’s gonna listen to me? She’s not. Tried to get through the front doors, the cops are there holding the reporters off so I brought her from the back which is crowded by the way, thanks for asking.””
I shut my eyes. “Shit, Jennifer!”
“Quick, we’re almost at the floor. She and Tinka are freaking the already–”
The line cuts,
“David?” I repeat his name again before staring at the screen. Shi
I leave the spot I’m in and wait for the coughing elevator to ope meeting my dad’s siblings before I left for the army. Dad had a that are worse than Winny.
The Prescott relatives out there are wolves. I remember rthday party and let’s just say there are people out there
Winny hates me because she sees me as the son her husband m le outside of their marriage. But now that the world knows I was named heir of the Prescott empire, these people see me as he illegitimate bastard standing between them and the great-grandfather’s wealth. Which makes this all the more polital.
The shareholders will have to pick a temporary person since Iven’t met the clause so they have the opportunity to straighten their legacy back.”

The elevator opens and I see the moment Jennifer is about to enter the damn hall where the bunch of tigers are waiting.
“Jen.” I say her name and she stops, turning back to look at me.
The moment she walks back toward me, Nisha and Baxter spots around the corner and I see his eyes light up like he just found ammunition. I grab her hand and pull her back into the open elevator.
“Tinka, I’ll be back.” Jennifer pokes her head out just before the elevator closes.
The moment she faces me, my face is hard.
“What the fuck are you doing here?”
She blinks. Then looks at me in wonder like she thought I would be here sobbing or something.
“Wow…so much for someone whose dad just had a heart attack-
“Doctors are handling that.” I say flatly and look away as the elevator opens.
“I heard the news and I thought you would need someone… by your side… moral support… your girlfriend?” Jennifer comes around so that she’s standing in front of me and I lick my lip to explain why I can’t have her here.
“These people are vultures, okay? Most of them have been ostracized from the Prescott business and an opportunity just arose for one of them to rise to the occasion. You can’t be here-
“Harvey, are you not…sad?” Jennifer says with those big pretty eyes. She comes closer to me and puts her hand on my forehead. Then both hands on my cheeks. “I don’t care that these people are vultures. I came here to see you. Are you okay?”
“Yes.” I close my eyes and exhale. But I can’t feel relief that she’s here. Not yet. “Now that you know I’m okay, I’ll get someone to drive you-” Then I remember. If I’m here, I won’t be able to protect her back at Ocean springs.
“Can you stay at my place tonight?”
“Why your-”
“Sir. Sir.”
The elevator opens and a whole entourage of suits find me. Lawyers, dad’s director, assistants, all the Harvard Law types that my dad has worked with over the years. It’s the exact chaos was escaping from to think for two goddamn seconds.
“Harvey.” Dad’s assistant, Laura, exhales. She takes one look at Jennifer and looks back at me. “We need to talk.”
“I’m sure, Can we talk about this later-”
“No. With all due respect, sir, no. These are our lawyers and they are here for your interest. You cannot keep avoiding this conversation, Everyone is having it. The most important person to be having it is you and we haven’t even arrived at anything.”
“I’m not married. What else is there to argue about-”
“Sir, the shareholders are all whispering about your uncle right downstairs. Steven Prescott. He was banned from the company by your dad because he was found misappropriating company funds. Your dad made him sell his shares back then. But right now, it’s obvious a new era is coming.”
“Sir, although Steven was banned, he has many friends in the shreholder group who are all older than you. They play golf together. Smoke cigars together. Probably fuck the same mistresses. Steven is their guy. They’re going to vote to have him as the temporary CEO,”
“Baxter’s not trying to get in?” I fold my arms.

“Your brother stands no chance, obviously. He doesn’t know the directors of the company, neither do they know him except from the fact that he spends money like water. Not even you know them. What made you stand out was your work ethic with the casino and your popularity.”
“To make matters worse.” Laura says, “He is already promising them bonus shares which by the way the company cannot afford at this moment. Our stock is already dropping because your father is in the hospital and our investors are not sure of the fate of the company. Steven is erratic. He is like Baxter but much older one. This could be the end of everything your grandfather built.”
Now I fix my hand into my hair.
Pull at it. Think.
