I close the distance until I’m towering over her, until she has to tt her head back to see my face. The lawyers behind her take an instinctive step back.
“I don’t give a fuck that you worked with my dad all these years.”
I use the tone that makes grown men in my casino forget how to breathe.
“I am not Francis and you won’t ask her questions like that. Ever
Laura’s mouth clicks shut. She nods once.
“Harv-“Jennifer starts.
“I’ll think of something else.”
“Sir, there’s no time.” The lawyers look at each other, sweating. “The shareholders are already gathering. Steven’s is already promising the world—”
I tune them out.
I feel it in my chest. The weight. The pressure. The fucking impossibility of this situation pressing down on my lungs until I can barely breathe.
And then I think about my casino.
My dealers, my waitresses, my kitchen staff, the janitors who clean up after rich assholes every night. All those people who depend on me for their paycheck, the entire empire im building
Of course the whole family is here like raccoons because it’s really the casino money they’re after. That’s why Steven could promise the shareholders bonus shares…they’re probably talking about that right now in some corner, cutting deals, making promises they can’t keep. I know how these vultures operate.
The shareholders will definitely take the bait. They go for their interest every time, they don’t give a shit about the Prescott legacy or nothing like that.
And it’s killing me that I can’t use violence in this situation to corect the order. Can’t put a bounty on Steven’s head. Can’t have my guys pay him a visit in a dark alley. This is boardrooms and votes and bullshit corporate politics….a whole differen battlefield where my usual weapons don’t work.
“Harvey?” I feel Jennifer behind me with her hand slipping into mine. I turn to look at her like I’m still her man and not some cornered animal about to snap.
“Why don’t we all… go to your house and talk more?” She says italm. Level. Like she’s the only one in this building with a clear head. “The matter is important. But we don’t have to solve in this hallway.”
I was hoping I would take her home to make sure she’s safe tonight already.
Laura nods like that gives her hope that Jennifer just said that.
“Yeah.” I squeeze Jennifer’s hand. “Let’s do that.”

Jennifer Marie.
The arguing is even worse now that we’re at Harvey’s place. I turn off the kitchen tap so I can overhear it correctly. Laura… that lawyer woman is really engaging in the conversation, it literally sounds like a matter of life and death and I want to think it is. I heard everything they said.
Harvey could lose his casino if he doesn’t come up with a solution in what… hours? And it’s crazy because of all that he could lose, Harvey is still saying no, adamantly that there’s no solution
But I’m here.
We’re dating….
We could… get married… I guess. I know it’s crazy but at least were not doing it under a damn contract like Baxter and Nisha. At least we actually love each other. At least when I say yes it means something real.
Tinka comes in shaking her head, she went there to peek for more parts of the conversation I wouldn’t be able to hear. “What are they saying? Well apart from what I’ve heard.”
“Harvey is not budging.” Tinka leans against the counter, arms crossed. “That hospital floor after you left? I swear those Prescott people are like wolves. He’s going to lose everything if he doesn’t fix this solution in the next what…bloody two hours. They’re gonna vote and once that happens-”
I put my hand over my lips and think.
“Jennifer!” Tinka squeals at me and I look at her with wonder.
“What””

“Harvey is not asking you because he doesn’t want to force you to marry him in this… circumstance. He’s being all noble and stupid. So go there and make it easy for him. Offer it. Let him know you’re willing.”
“I want to.” I say, putting my hand on my head and shutting my eyes for only one second. The words feel huge in my mouth. Marriage. To Harvey.
“But what?”
“There’s no but. I want to. I really want to.” I open my eyes and look at her. “He’s gonna say no though… he’s been saying no all night. You should have seen the way he spoke to that lawyer when she even suggested it. He almost bit her head off.”
“He loves you. You love him. Let him hear it from you. Not from some random lawyer treating you like a business transaction. From you.” Tinka grabs my shoulders. “Go. Go nowefore I push you.”
I take one deep breath in the kitchen before walking away to do xactly that.
“For God’s sake Harvey-”
“God help us.”
I step into the sitting area and my heart cracks a little at his reply to the lawyer.
Harvey is over by the piano, pouring himself some golden liquid into a glass. Oh shit. Now he’s drinking so now I know the situation is really affecting him,
He better not argue with me when I say yes.

The lawyers… all three of them have removed their ties with papers all over the desk. They’ve been at this for three hours since we came here trying to find some loophole to stop that man… Steven… from becoming the temporary CEO but they have nothing. Their faces are pale. Their shirts are wrinkled. They look like they’ve been through war.
“I’ll do it.” I say and Laura looks at me.
The lawyers…all three of them straighten their shoulders at once because they already understand what I mean by that. Hope flickers across their exhausted faces.
But Harvey, the one who’s supposed to understand me the most walks toward me and looks at me confused.
“You’ll go to bed? Good, you have work tomorrow-”
“I’ll marry you.”
The glass pauses halfway to his mouth.
“I didn’t ask you to marry me.”
“Can you stop being so stubborn?” I ask, noticing Nate come in with David behind me. Great. More audience for this conversation. “There’s nothing else. We’ve been at this three hours already. Your dad’s company-”
“You don’t have to insert yourself in it.” His voice is hard. The voice he uses with people he’s shutting out. “It’s not your responsibility to give up something out of your life to fix the fucking Prescott legacy.”
He says it like I’m offering to donate a kidney to a stranger. Like my willingness means nothing. Harvey looks at his drink with this emptiness in his eyes and goes to set it back on the table like he’s already given up.
I walk toward him. Toward the massive wall of stubborn man who would rather lose everything than ask me for help.
I’ve seen him fix things in less than minutes. Burning properties. Buying buildings. Making problems disappear like magic. But in this case, he can’t do it that way. And it just has to be this way. Time is ticking and he cannot see that because he’s too busy being noble.
“You’re gonna lose the casino.”
“Then I lose it.”
“Really?” I step closer. “The casino you poured your all into? You literally built an empire from nothing and now some hungry relative is gonna take it all away?”
“I’m not gonna force or manipulate you into marrying me just to save the legacy of this family that I really don’t give a shit about.”
“That’s a lie… you do give a shit.” David says from somewhere be ind me.
