Jennifer Marie.

I shut my eyes and try not to scoff when I open them back.

“No, you tell me.”

“I’m serious, Jen.” His teeth clench.

“Do I know what marriage is? I literally have an idea of what my wedding dress is gonna look like. What the guests’ code of color is gonna be. The music that’s gonna play. The flowers. The venue. The cake. The first dance. All of it, Harvey. I’ve thought about it since I was a little girl.”

“Fucking exactly.” He comes closer to me and I stop counting on my fingers like a fool. I knew he was gonna ask me something that would make all this harder for him to accept and I failed the question. “So why would you think I want you to rush into this?”

I stare at him.

“If you’re gonna get married to me someday, I want you to have it exactly the way you want it to be. We’ve not dated that long. I’ve not asked for your parents’ blessing. We’ve not talked about whether we want kids. We’ve… we just got back together and-”

“And…I love you.” I say it. “Mind you, four years ago I didn’t think I was gonna be having…what…amazing sex with my nerdy best friend? I didn’t think you were ever gonna show up after you disappeared. I envisioned I was gonna end up with some New York prince… and now I’m with the enforcer of Manhattan.”

His jaw shifts.

“Nothing is exactly as any of us planned but we’re here because you didn’t stop chasing me.” I put my hand on his chest and feel his heart beating fast under my palm.”

“Do you know what it means to be married to a Prescott?” Harvey goes again, another blockage to prevent me from saying yes.

“We’re gonna have to move to the Prescott home which is where the next leaders must be. It has all the family funds, the archives, the security systems, the staff that’s been there for generations. You would have to make that your new home as Mrs. Prescott. That’s where relatives show up unannounced thinking they can walk through the doors whenever they want.”

“I’m gonna have to introduce you to the shareholders. All one hundred of them. Every single one will have an opinion about you. About whether you’re good enough. About whether you’re just some girl who got lucky. We’re gonna have to go to fucking disgusting events….galas, fundraisers, political dinners, things that make that soiree look like a backyard barbecue. Press conferences. The city will know your name, your face, your business.”

His voice drops.

“Jennifer, these are things I already hate and now I have to bring you into it.””

I think about it for a moment. Really think.

It feels scary. Like falling off a cliff scary but Harvey is gonna be here.

He’s coming closer and closer to me, looking for that doubt, that hesitation, that reason to protect me from himself.

“Yeah.” I say before he can say anything else. “I’m going out there and I’m gonna tell Laura to get the priest and the rest.” I turn, ready to walk away when Harvey calls my name again,

Chapter 92

My back is to him and I’m getting upset now. Why is he still fighting this? Why can’t he just let me-

“Harvey!”

I yell and turn…but he is on his knees.

I slap my hand over my chest when he takes off one of the rings on his finger that I’ve seen him wear occasionally. A silver skull ring with tiny black gems for eyes.

“Jennifer Marie.” Harvey looks up at me, his neck going up so I can see the fusion of tattoos there. “Come closer so you can hear every word.” He jokes and I feel something wet in my eyes because I wasn’t expecting it. It’s crazy cause I came here to tell him let’s do it but I swear I still wasn’t expecting… this.

I come closer to him and stare into his eyes. Those dark, danger us eyes that have seen so much, done so much, and right now they’re looking at me like I’m the only thing in the world that matters.

“I love you.” His voice is nothing like the Harvey who bosses people around. “Four years passed and the sound of your voice was still in my brain. The way you scrunch your face when you sleep. The scent of your hair. I remembered every detail like I never left you.”

A tear rolls down my cheek.

“You are the only woman I will ever love that way. You are my soulmate.” He reaches up and brushes the tear away with his thumb, but more keep coming. “I know things have changed in circumstance but these are words only you will ever hear. I love you to the core. I will die for you. I will sacrifice everything for you. I will die on a hill for you. I will love you to fault… my heart will never beat for another.”

I’m literally melting and shaking as I hear those words from him My whole body is trembling, my hands won’t stop shaking, tears are streaming down my face and I don’t even care who sees

I just stand there crying like an fool.

“Are you gonna?” He smirks, that little crooked smile, and I laugh through my tears, forgetting I’m supposed to say yes and give him my finger.

I nod, wiping my cheeks all at the same time. “Yes. Yes, I will… marry you.”

Harvey gets up on his feet and puts the ring on my finger while my hands are still shaking. The silver skull ring with the black gem eyes….it’s too big, obviously but I feel the weight all the same. The weight of what it means.

He holds my face and I kiss him.

And oh my god, this kiss.

It’s not like our other kisses. This one is slow. Deep. Like he’s trying to tell me everything he can’t say with words. His lips move against mine and I feel it in my toes. He tastes like forever I grab his shirt and pull him closer because I never want this moment to end.

“I love you.” I whisper to him in a breath before my lips meet his again.

“I love you too.” He whispers it back.

Then before we kiss again, I begin to hear clapping.

We both stop and I look behind me to see everyone staring at us Tinka is literally jumping up and down with her hands over her mouth, Nate and David are grinning, humping fists with each other. Laura and the lawyers are also clapping, looking relieved and excited at the same time.

I feel my face turn bright red so I bury my face in Harvey’s shouler and I can feel his chuckle from his Adam’s apple,

vibrating through his whole body.

“Congratulations!” Tinka comes forward and wraps her arms around both of us. “Freaking engaged!”
