The moment the priest says that, I close the space between Jennifer and me, hold her face, and place my lips upon hers in a kiss.
There are tears on my face that I didn’t realize found their way there. I think it’s got to do with the fact that it feels unreal to know my unrequited love for Jennifer has finally become shared. Four years of wanting her, dreaming about her, convincing myself I didn’t deserve her and now she’s mine. Legally. Officially. Forever.
I’m not sure whether to hug or kiss her. I really want to do both as I hear clapping around us and Jennifer chuckles, looking happy even if we had to rush this.
Even if I was looking for every reason to ruin it because I don’t want her to regret how we did it.
We’re married.
I’m fucking married.
Elio pops confetti up in the sky and Jen looks up, her face all reddened from smiling so much. She stands on her toes and wipes my own face. I guess I’m red as a tomato too. Imagine that A whole fucking mafia king blushing like a teenager at his wedding.
“Here, sir.”
The guy from the registry approaches us, holding a leather folder like it contains nuclear codes. He’s got that government employee look, like he’s seen too much bureaucracy to be impressed by anything. But even he’s smiling a little. Probably doesn’t get called to private estates for midnight weddings every day.
He hands us two marriage certificates and passes over a pen.
“Go ahead.” I tell Jen and stand behind her as she signs her name Jennifer Marie… then she adds Prescott behind it. I watch her hand move, watch her write my last name and my chest, does something weird.
“A freaking Prescott.” I hear Tinka shaking her head at our sides, tears in her eyes, grinning like she just won the lottery.
I take the pen next. Harvey Prescott. I’ve signed that name a thousand times on checks, on contracts but this one means something different.
The registry guy takes the certificates back and pulls out a metal stamp that’s official-lookingit. He presses it down on both certificates with a solid thunk, leaving behind an embossed crest and the words “Approved by the Superior Court of New York County” in fancy letters.
“Yeah, congratulations.” He hands them back to us. “You both are legally married. Mr. and Mrs. Prescott.”
Mr. and Mrs. Prescott, I like the sound of that,
“Let’s talk.” I whisper and pull Jennifer by the hands so that we go inside while we can still hear the rest clapping for us.
The moment I shut the door, Jennifer turns to me with those eys.
“I want a diamond wedding ring next.” She says it immediately, like she’s been waiting to say it.

Chapter 93
I don’t respond. I just scoop her up so that her legs wrap around my waist and I set her on the table to kiss her.

I pour everything into this kiss. My hands roam her back, pull her closer, fingers tangle in my hair and she makes this little sound against my mouth that makes me want to forget about press conferences and shareholders and the entire outside world.
I stop so she can breathe. Her lips are swollen, her eyes glassy, and she looks at me like I’m the only man in the world.
“What else?” I kiss her neck and listen to her giggle when I bring her back down to the ground floor. “Anything else I can get you?”
“You…” She bites her lip, shy suddenly. “I want to see you be a submissive husband to me.”
She chuckles, knowing exactly what she’s asking for, as I bring her closer and she tries to squirm away.
Not happening, sweetheart.
I rest my head on her forehead and breathe.
Man, this is a beautiful moment yet we have to leave the house already. The shareholders are gathering and we have to walk into that chaos to announce that I’m married.
Therefore, officially the heir which means all their plans just got fucked.
“We’re going to leave soon. Whatever it looks like out there with the company’s situation, I just want you to remember you’re with me. Alright?”
Jennifer nods while I’m holding her hands.
“You’re with me.” I repeat it, needing her to understand that no matter what happens out there, she’s got me.
A knock comes at the door and I know it’s Laura.
“Guys, the press conference will start soon. We have to leave right now so we can make it in time and crash it.” Her voice is muffled through the door but the urgency is clear.
“We’re coming.” I say. “You remember?” I murmur for only Jennifer.
“Of course. You’re with me.” She looks down at her outfit. “I should probably wear something different since we’re going in
the face of cameras-”
“I think it’s fine.”
“Of course you think it’s fine, Harv.” She rolls her eyes playfully. Tinka already ordered me something so I’ll change into that. Tell Laura to give me five minutes.”
Jennifer stands on her toes and kisses me before opening the door to Laura who moves back a bit. I can see her hands are still ticking as if she believes we’re lagging behind or something
“Can you tell my butler to get the cars ready?” I ask Laura.
“Of course! I’ll be out there waiting.” She’s vibrating with nervously. “You know it’s gonna be crazy out there. The reporters are already swarming. This is going to be-”
“I run a casino and a club in an entirely different country. I spent two years in the military. I think this is the easiest thing I’ve actually stood in front of. So no need for the pep talk, but I do appreciate it.”
She blinks at me,

You want a cigarette? You look like you need something to calm down.”
“Right. Maybe I’ll calm down after this is over and we have a little celebration in Kings Casino?”

“Sure. I’m sure Tom and Bozzo…um, what’s the name of the other lawyer…. the three musketeers?” I joke and Laura shakes her head.
“They’ll love it.” She walks away and I light up the cigarette between my lips.
I change into a white shirt. I pick dark pants too. Can’t go there looking like I have a gun in my pocket. Need to look the part.
I wait for Jennifer at the entrance and when she comes out, she’s wearing a really professional gown that curves out her hips and makes her waist look ridiculously small. The kind of dress that says “Mrs Prescott” while still making every man in the room forget his own name.
I hold out my hand and she comes down the stairs too slowly so end up taking her by the waist and lifting her the rest of the way. Ain’t nobody got time for slow when the world is about to explode.
We get into the car. David is the only one that comes with us but Tinka and Nate stay behind. While we’re in the moving car. Jennifer is holding my fingers and trying to warm me up. This girl thinks I’m shaken up by all that has happened. If anything, maybe I am. I’m just pretending it makes no difference to me.
Laura faces up from the front seat.
“Look at your phone. It’s started already.”
I take out my phone and the notification finds me before I even have to search for it. Live footage filling my screen of what’s happening outside Prescott Holdings headquarters.
Reporters are on the front steps like ants on sugar. Camera crews jostle for position. Microphones on long poles ware through the air like weapons.
The comments are already flooding in with speculation.
“How long does it usually take before they get to the part where they vote?” I ask Laura.
“Um. Fifteen… twenty minutes.” She checks her watch. “We’re gonna make it in time and your marriage certificates are sitting very perfect here.”
I bite my lip only a bit when the car slows down and I see the driver turn sharply toward me at once like he’s seen something that makes him want to get out of the car and run.
“What?” I ask.
“Sir…”
