Sleeping With the Wrong Man: Uncle vs. Nephew novel Chapter 6

Chapter 6

Liana couldn’t explain why, but something about the way Silas phrased those few words felt off.

The next second, Silas said, “A year ago, when Logan’s company was in a cross-border lawsuit with Starcrest Technologies, their legal team was one of the best in the industry. Your company’s legal department was helpless. In the end, you anonymously emailed their attorneys and pointed out a procedural defect in their core patent application. They withdrew the lawsuit immediately.”

He paused. “Was that also one of the miscellaneous tasks you handled?”

Liana’s breath stalled.

That incident had been buried so deeply that even Logan believed the company had paid a top international consultant to save them. How could Silas possibly know?

Unfazed by the shock tightening her face, he continued in the same even, almost indifferent

tone.

“Two years ago, one of Logan’s core tech staff planned to jump ship with a project. You set a trap in advance, uncovered evidence of him secretly moving company assets, and forced him

out with nothing. That protected the company’s core technology.

“Was that also a miscellaneous task?

“Half a year ago, when Logan’s financing deal failed and the company faced liquidation, you discovered a loophole in the agreement’s governing-law clause and resurrected a dead end.

“Another thing you supposedly accomplished while ‘sorting documents,’ Liana?”

With every detail he revealed, Liana’s face grew paler.

These were the darkest, most labor-intensive things she had done in the past three years, things she hid behind the mask of a dutiful wife, obstacles she cleared so Logan could move

forward.

Each one would have made her a rising star in the legal world. But for Logan’s fragile ego, she buried every ounce of credit.

She thought these secrets would rot in her stomach forever.

But Silas, whom she had met only a handful of times, now laid them all bare in the light, speaking as if he were reciting the weather.

Her fingers tightened around the cardboard box in her lap until the edge dug into her skin.

She looked up sharply, watching the unreadable man beside her. “Mr. Young, did you investigate me?”

Being seen through so cleanly made her skin crawl, as if she were standing naked in the snow.

Silas turned his head, his gaze steady. In the closed space of the car, the cool wood scent on him seemed even stronger.

“I had no intention of investigating you.” His brow furrowed slightly, as if her reaction annoyed him. “I’m acknowledging your ability.”

Acknowledging her ability?

She had shared a bed with Logan for three years, given him everything, and in return he called her a liar and a useless woman. Yet Silas, practically a stranger, understood her value as if he had been beside her through it all.

Her mind churned, though her expression slowly evened out. She lowered her eyes and laughed at herself.

Silas caught the shift in her mood. He said nothing else, only pushed the blue folder toward her again.

“One million dollars, after tax,” he said. “Sign a confidentiality agreement and draft this

contract for me.’

A million dollars.”

Liana’s heart slammed against her chest. She had barely any money left. Divorce, rebuilding her life, starting from scratch, everything required money. And this amount was a lifeline.

She was tempted.

But reason pulled her back. She raised her eyes and spoke seriously. “Mr. Young, I need to tell you something first.

“I’ve decided to divorce Logan. He’ll receive the papers soon.

“I will no longer be your niece-in-law. And I’ll no longer be part of the Young family.”

She paused, voice crisp. “Knowing that, are you sure you want to hand me such a confidential project?”

She wanted to see his reaction, whether he admired her skill or had ulterior motives.

Silas fell silent. A few seconds stretched in the air. His lashes lowered, casting a faint shadow beneath his eyes.

Then, calmly, he asked, “You’re divorcing him?”

“Yes,” she nodded without hesitation.

“I trust your character.”

His answer was so decisive it startled her. His gaze flicked from the battered cardboard box in her lap to her dazed expression. Then he offered something even heavier.

“Whatever happened between you and Logan is your private matter. I am a businessman. I only evaluate capability.

“My legal department needs a chief counsel. Are you interested?”

Liana froze.

Silas’ company was the core enterprise of the Young Group, a commercial empire that sat at the very top of Kinstone’s hierarchy.

Only graduates from the world’s most elite schools with impeccable résumés ever made it inside.

But she hadn’t attended a top law school. After graduation, she wasted three years working in Logan’s small company.
