Layla closed her eyes. “Basic training could start at any moment. I suggest you get some rest too.”

A smug smile played on Annie’s lips. “Layla, you just don’t get it. We troopers have great stamina. We’re not weak like you mech engineers.”

Layla didn’t say anything else.

Their optical computers were cut off from the external network, but they could still receive group messages from the academy. It had been five or six hours since they arrived at Training Delta, and with no word from the instructors, everyone had been relaxing.

That was, until eleven at night, just as everyone was getting ready for bed. A notification pinged on all the students’ optical computers simultaneously.

[All students, report to the training ground immediately. Basic training has begun.]

The students were stunned.

“What? Basic training this late at night?”

“Oh my god, I’m in the middle of a bath.”

“Where are my shoes?”

Chaos erupted among most of the students. They had expected basic training to be tough, but they hadn’t anticipated this kind of stunt on the very first day.

Having already had plenty of sleep, Layla was the first to arrive at the training ground. Her uniform was neat, buttons done up meticulously, and she stood ramrod straight, all business.

Antony Hernandez, the dean of the College of Military, nodded in approval. He turned to Herbert Mathis beside him. “This kid must be in the trooper division, right? She’s showing great discipline.”

Herbert pulled up the student’s information on his optical computer and his eyes widened. “No, she’s in the mech engineer division. This Layla is an odd one. Her aptitude is clearly high, and she has a high shifter tier. Why didn’t she choose the trooper division?”

“What’s that supposed to mean, Herbert? Are you saying only shifters with low tiers should be mech engineers?”

A woman in a black training uniform with a neat, short haircut cut in. Shayla Mcgrath, an instructor from the mech department, stared coldly at him.

Herbert immediately backed down. “No, no, that’s not what I meant. I just meant that for a girl with a high

shifter tier…”

He trailed off, realizing that Shayla herself was a high-tier shifter.

In the time they’d been talking, the students had all assembled. Antony glanced at the time, his brow furrowing in dissatisfaction.

“You are the first of the five colleges to assemble, but it still took you a full eighteen minutes. For the College of Military, that’s pathetic.”

Leon Baker, standing next to Caleb James, called out, “So, Dean, how long did last year’s class take?”

Antony’s gaze swept over to him. “No class in the history of the College of Military has ever taken more than ten minutes to assemble.”

Annie muttered unhappily, “I bet no class in history ever had to assemble in the middle of the night, either.”

She’d been in bed with a beauty mask on, and she’d thrown her uniform on so fast that her face was still sticky with the serum. It was incredibly uncomfortable.

Antony knew this group was full of privileged kids, but he showed no signs of going easy on them.

“The training intensity at the College of Military is several times that of the other programs. If anyone wants to transfer out, you can register with Ms. Mcgrath now. For those of you staying, line up immediately. You have a hundred-kilometer cross-country run. Complete it within two hours, and you can go back to bed.”

Even for shifters with enhanced stamina, a hundred-kilometer run at this hour, undoubtedly filled with obstacles, all to be done in two hours, was a daunting task.

But despite the difficulty, no one moved to transfer.

Getting into the College of Military was hard enough. Graduating meant being fast-tracked into the Alpha Prime military.

Even the notoriously pampered Annie didn’t back down.

She sidled up to Layla, who was stretching. “Hey, you must be well-rested, huh? Tsk, did you have some inside info that we’d be assembling tonight?”

Layla shook her head. “No inside info. I just guessed. I was wrong, though. I thought they’d wake us up in the middle of the night, but it’s only just past eleven.”

Annie was speechless.

She felt like what Layla said made sense, but it still felt off somehow.

Just then, an instructor yelled for them to start. The cat ears on Annie’s head twitched. She looked at Layla, “Well, I’m not waiting for you. I’m gonna run fast so I can get back to my mask.”

“I wouldn’t be in such a hurry at the start.”

“Why?”

As soon as the words left her mouth, a male student, likely a speed-type shifter, shot past them like a blur.

A few minutes later, a pained cry echoed through the darkness.

“Oh, crap! Are there seriously traps here? With freaking spikes in them! It almost got me in the ass.

The rest of the runners fell silent, suddenly glad they had been slower off the mark.

After these two incidents, Annie started to see Layla in a new light. She had a gut feeling that sticking with her would make things go a lot smoother.

Layla didn’t object to Annie tagging along, but she didn’t go out of her way to help either. As they passed a

group

of girls, one of them suddenly laughed. “Annie, don’t you know? Layla’s not a Sullivan anymore.”

The speaker was Martha Beltran, another noble from Alpha Prime in the command division. She was close with Caleb’s sister, Denise James, and was even engaged to their cousin.

She was clearly trying to get back at Layla on Caleb’s behalf.

Isolating Layla seemed like the best way to do it.

The last thing she expected was to see Annie Knight, who was so popular and used to despise Layla, sticking to her like glue.

Hearing Martha, Annie raised an eyebrow. “She may not be a Sullivan, but she’s still my classmate. Besides, I doubt the real Sullivan heiress could even get into Imperial Academy. Being a noble who can’t pass the entrance exam? Now that’s embarrassing.”

The jab hit its mark.

The fact that Xanthe Sullivan likely couldn’t get into Imperial Academy was a sore spot for the James family.

It was why they were now considering postponing the wedding, waiting until after Xanthe had at least tried to get in before making it official.

Seeing Martha’s sour expression, Annie felt a surge of satisfaction. But when she turned back, she saw Layla had pulled ahead.

“Hey! Why didn’t you wait for me? Layla, wait up.”

She took off at a sprint to catch up, cleverly following the exact path Layla had taken.

Sure enough, she didn’t encounter a single trap.

When she finally caught up, she pouted. “Layla, why are you being such a wimp? Martha said that to you, and you’re not even angry?”

“What’s there to be angry about? I was always just the adopted daughter. It’s a fact that I had to leave when Xanthe came back.”

“But you were their family for so long. Don’t you have any feelings for each other? It’s impossible. If Xanthe hadn’t come back, you would have been the Sullivan heiress forever, right?”

Layla gave a faint smile. “That wouldn’t necessarily have been a good thing. It’s better this way, with everyone in their rightful place.”

Annie studied her for a long moment before nodding. “Yeah, you’re right. I have to admit, you’re a lot less annoying now.”

“We need to pick up the pace.”

“Didn’t you just say not to run too fast because of the traps?”

“I’ve figured out their pattern.”

Annie was once again left speechless.

While the new recruits were starting their grueling night run, Dean Antony Hernandez saw the head of the training base, General Alexander Hunter, walking towards him with a complicated expression.

“Alexander, what’s wrong?”

General Hunter, a portly man with a thick beard, spoke in a shocked whisper. “Antony, you’re not going to believe this. Prince Atlas is on his way here. Can you imagine the chaos?”
