Chapter 27
Layla frowned. ‘What’s with this fox? Why is he policing my relationship with my own brother?’
Did he really think he was her husband?
Even if he were, he wouldn’t have the right to control who she associated with.
Besides, Atlas wasn’t really her husband.

She decided not to reply. She couldn’t fight him, she couldn’t outsmart him, and there was nothing she could do about the situation right now.
It was better to say nothing at all than to get herself worked up.
But Layla’s silence only managed to piss off a certain prince.
Atlas, who had just been about to board his aero-vehicle and leave Training Delta, turned back. He narrowed his eyes, casting a dangerous look over the fog-shrouded training base.
Everyone around him held their breath. The base commander, Alexander Hunter, was practically sweating bullets.
‘What’s going on? Is he not leaving? Did void raiders show up on our training delta or something?’
In the end, Atlas did leave, but the scowl on his face was thunderous.
Anyone could see the prince was in a foul mood.
Then again, it seemed like the prince was never in a good one.
Layla couldn’t care less about Atlas’s mood. She continued with her training as usual. Her outstanding performance in the mech-shooting portion had catapulted her overall score to first place, even surpassing Tomas Coffey.
One of the instructors questioned Layla’s score. “A ninety-nine percent accuracy rate? That’s ridiculously high. Who was supervising that session? Did they go easy on her?”
Shayla Mcgrath frowned in annoyance. “Nolan Sullivan was the lead officer, but I was there too, along with other staff. We all confirmed Layla’s score is legitimate.”
“Nolan Sullivan? Isn’t that her brother?”
“So what if he’s her brother?” Shayla retorted. “Plenty of people in the military have family connections. Besides, why would anyone cheat on a simple training score?”
The instructor from the Command track who’d spoken first sneered, “You never know.”
Antony Hernandez, the head of the Military College, cut them off. “I spoke with Layla earlier and offered her a chance to switch tracks. She told me she wants to stay in Mech Engineering. I don’t see why she’d need to

fake her training scores. Plus, many of us have worked with Nolan. He’s a man of integrity and wouldn’t do something like that.”
The instructor who had accused Layla of cheating looked sheepish.
Antony turned to Shayla. “Shayla, this Layla is a real talent. Since she’s decided to stay in Mech Engineering, keep a close eye on her and make sure she gets the support she needs.”
“Yes, of course.”
Herbert Mathis, however, wasn’t ready to give up. After the meeting, he approached Antony. “Director, Layla’s shooting talent is off the charts. If I can convince her to voluntarily transfer to the Trooper track, you’d be okay with that, right?”
“You can certainly try.”
Herbert nodded enthusiastically. “Honestly, someone as skilled as Layla should be in the Crown Squad. It’s a shame she’s no longer a Sullivan.”
The five students in the Crown Squad were all exceptionally talented, but that was before Layla came along.
Now, her powerful performance rivaled even Tomas’s, making her a clear candidate for the elite team.
Antony looked exasperated. “That’s their business. We, as instructors, shouldn’t get involved.”
“Right, I was just thinking out loud. I’ll focus on persuading her to switch tracks first.”

Meanwhile, the five members of the Crown Squad were gathered in a small lounge, sipping coffee and discussing that very topic: Layla.
Chaim Howard, who already disliked Layla, said angrily, “This score is obviously fake. She must have cheated! I asked around, and the supervising officer was Nolan Sullivan, her brother!”
Romeo Garrison scoffed. “Chaim, why are you so worked up? Worried she’s going to take your spot?”
Layla was in the Mech Engineering track, and Chaim was the only mech engineer in their squad. He was undeniably brilliant, having started working on mech development with his uncle at fifteen.
But while he easily outshone his peers, he was no match for a prodigy like Layla.
Kierra Knight, another member, reminded Romeo, “The Trooper track instructors are trying to get Layla to switch. If she does, she’ll be a threat to you and me, not Chaim.”
The squad had three troopers. The quietest, Wayne Lara, was undoubtedly the strongest. If Layla did switch tracks and become a trooper, it would likely be either Kierra or Romeo who got replaced.
Romeo froze, turning to Tomas. “Commander, are you actually considering Layla?”
Tomas, who had been studying a data report, looked up. “If Layla’s shooting score is real,” he said calmly,

“then the question isn’t whether we’ll let her join, but whether she’ll want to join us.”
The others were stunned.
Layla, choosing them?

After finishing her endurance training, Layla headed back to her dorm for a shower, but Annie Knight tailed her like a shadow.
“What, you want to shower with me?” Layla asked, deadpan.
“Hell no! I’ve got everything you’ve got! But seriously, Layla, was your accuracy in the mech shooting really ninety-nine percent?”
“Yeah.”
“Holy shit, you’re incredible! It’s like you got even stronger after your pheromone surge. Spill it. Did a hot young guy really come and help you through your rut?”
Annie’s curiosity was legendary, and she had been holding back this question for as long as she could.
Layla just grunted in response.
“Wow! So he does have a conscience!” Annie exclaimed. “Hey, how come none of us saw him? Did he just leave right after your rut was over?”
“He had things to do. It’s complicated.” Layla turned on the shower, nearly soaking Annie, who leaped back like a startled cat.
Layla didn’t want to hear another word about Atlas.
The faint pink marks on her body had faded, but the problem of how to get away from the moody Ninth Prince for good still loomed.
She frowned. Where should she even start?
She had her limits, of course. If Atlas pushed her too far, she would file for divorce and let the Interstellar Courthouse sort it out.
She’d rather burn it all down than be backed into a corner indefinitely, even if he knew her weaknesses.
The rest of the military training passed without incident. Layla’s scores remained at the top, consistently edging out Tomas.
She ignored the gossip and the instructors trying to persuade her to switch majors, remaining completely
unfazed.
After leaving the training base, Nolan returned to Sullivan Manor and reported Layla’s progress to his father.

Karter was stunned, then delighted, “Is that girl really that good?”
