Layla’s gaze fell on the clingy, almost puppy-like face. She pressed her lips together, then took a step forward.

Just as November thought she was going for a kiss and puckered up expectantly, she yanked open the training pod hatch and shoved him inside.

“Win, and there’s a kiss. Lose, and nothing.” Layla said.

Though a little deflated, November’s eyes still sparked with determination. “Just you wait, Star. I’ll wipe the floor with all three of them.”

The lv3 match officially began.

Not long after, a gunshot rang out in the simulation. Someone had run into November! Layla quickly turned to the screen.

It was Wallace Keith, the one who’d been loafing around snacking earlier.

Wallace didn’t even get a shot off before his avatar was instantly taken down with a single headshot, forced to log out.

He sat up in the pod, blinking in confusion. “Who got me?”

“November did,” Layla informed him.

“But… I didn’t even see him.” Wallace stammered, still bewildered. “And doesn’t it only count as a knockout if you hit the mech suit’s energy module?”

Hitting other parts just racked up damage. You needed to exceed fifty percent to be out. That was just one

shot!

Checking the training logs, Layla said, “One shot. Direct hit on your energy module.” Then her focus went back to the screen.

So this is the legendary sharpshooter. The only one to ever score 100% accuracy in mech marksmanship.

Wallace was dumbfounded. “That’s… insane.” He decided he needed another bag of chips to mend his shattered ego.

Soon after, Annie Knight’s avatar was eliminated too.

Muttering to herself, Annie climbed out. “Is this the Command Division? He barely knows us, and he already calculated the most efficient way to take us down.”

Layla kept her eyes down. No, this isn’t even close to Atlas Zimmer’s full strength. The young prince is Alpha Prime’s top commander. This training sim is a cakewalk for him.

Alex Richmond held out the longest, but even he was taken out by November in two clean shots.

Emerging from his pod, November offered Alex some parting advice. “You’ve got more potential than them, but your solo act is a liability.”

Alex’s face darkened, but he asked. “How is your aim that precise?”

‘Practice.

Alex didn’t argue further. He turned and silently began his own shooting drills, clearly stung that both the commander and the mech engineer on his team outclassed him, a dedicated trooper, in accuracy.

Wallace was eyeing the door, probably dreaming of snacks, but Annie grabbed him by the collar. “No way. You’re drilling with me.”

Back in the main training room, Layla had just turned to pull up the team’s performance stats when an arm snaked around her waist from behind.

November had taken his mask off, leaning his face in close. “Star. I won. You said there’d be a kiss.”

Layla couldn’t refuse.

One second, he’s a ruthless headshot machine in the sim. The next, he’s pouting for kisses. That kind of whiplash… Who could possibly resist?

She gave him a quick, almost dismissive peck on the corner of his mouth and tried to pull away. Dissatisfied, he tightened his hold and turned it into a real kiss.

Thankfully, Annie and the others weren’t there to see it, or they’d have choked on the second-hand romance.

When they finally broke apart, November’s fox ears twitched happily.

Layla immediately slipped free and climbed into a training pod of her own. Lying back in the semi-darkness, she lightly touched her lips.

‘Once this final competition is over, while he’s still in his rut, I’ll get him to agree to the divorce. She told herself.

Best to cut things off before anything else spiraled out of control. She couldn’t risk the orphanage or her brother getting caught up in this mess.

The next day, the team competition kicked off. Teams entered the massive simulation arena in order of their cumulative scores.

Crown Squad, predictably, entered first. Before disappearing into the gateway, Tomas glanced back, his eyes finding Layla and her team in the crowd.

‘So she actually managed to pull a full team together. His gaze lingered on the masked figure beside her. “Who’s that?”

Chaim scoffed. “Word is, it’s her husband. Probably just a last-minute fill-in.”

“She’s married?” Tomas asked.

“Apparently Chaim answered.

Tomas frowned slightly. “Why haven’t we seen him all training”

“Who knows? Must be a flake. Don’t sweat it. Zero points for sure. Aside from Layla, only Annie Knight has a decent score, and that’s just mid-tier. The other two troopers are nothing special.”

Tomas looked away, his voice low. “Don’t underestimate Layla Sullivan. If we cross paths, take her out first.”

“But we’ll be way ahead. They’re starting near the bottom. Why would we even see them?”

“She’ll catch up,” Tomas said, his tone leaving no room for doubt.

His teammates exchanged glances. They all thought Tomas was giving that Sullivan girl way too much credit.
