Chapter 81
Annie was quiet for a long time before finally sitting up.

In a low voice, Annie said, “It’s not just about feeling unwilling. Honestly, I just really don’t want to marry Branden. The more my family pushes, the more it gets on my nerves. And I looked into Randall.”
Annie went on, “Randall is seriously impressive. Randall’s dad was just a regular guy, but he was an amazing stellar ranger. He died on a mission not long after Randall was born, so Randall grew up with just his mom.
“Randall’s mom used to be the heiress of the Mooney family, but she broke ties with them to be with his dad. Life was rough for the two of them for a while, but Randall really stepped up. He’s super talented.”
Annie added, “Randall got into the College of Military at Imperial Academy with excellent grades, and even finished second in his year.
“He was one of the top students in Class S’s Trooper Division all the way through graduation, and then made it into the Military Command without a hitch. Now, he’s already working as an intern commander under Colonel Lewis.”
Annie looked up. “He’s smart, driven, and totally devoted to his mom. I did some digging, and everyone around him, like his friends and coworkers, has nothing but good things to say.”
“Honestly, his only flaw is that he can’t stand me. And as for his looks, he’s that kind of handsome I really go for.” Annie mumbled the last part, her voice barely above a whisper.
It was almost unheard of. Annie was actually blushing.
Layla could see that Annie was genuinely interested. Compared to Branden and all his entitled attitude, Randall seemed like a much better choice.
But the fact that Randall couldn’t stand Annie was a total deal-breaker.
Annie just waved it off. “That’s no biggie. He doesn’t really know me yet. Once he gets to know the real me, then he will decide if he wants to break off the engagement or not.”
Seeing Annie had made up her mind, Layla said, “I’ve got a friend who knows Colonel Lewis. Let me ask around and see what kind of guy Randall really is.”
“Great! If he really is that good, then I’ll go all out to make him fall for me!” Annie said with determination.
“But Annie, you need to be prepared. If you really choose Randall, you’ll be defying your family.” Layla cautioned.
Annie might end up taking the same path as Randall’s mom.
Annie might be a little pampered, but she wasn’t stupid. She said, her tone earnest, “I’m not afraid to tough it out, but first, I need to see if Randall’s really worth it.”
Layla nodded and then sent a message to Roger using her optical computer.
Layla: [Colonel Lewis, what do you think of the intern commander, Randall, under your command? Is he husband material?]
When Roger got the message, he was in the middle of giving Atlas his daily report.
Because of his rut, Atlas had fallen behind on some work, so he was playing catch-up now.
Luckily, Atlas was a total workaholic, so handling all this was second nature to him.

Chapter 81
When Roger saw the message, his heart skipped a beat, and his hand shook so hard that he almost splashed the coffee he was pouring for Atlas right in his face.
Under Atlas’s glare, Roger quickly got the robot to clean up the spilled coffee. He mumbled nervously, “It’s a message from your wife.”
Atlas’s brow twitched, but he didn’t say a word.
Roger hesitated, unsure whether he should say anything at all. Just thinking about Layla’s message made him jumpy.
‘She asked if Randall was husband material. Wait, is she planning to ditch His Highness and get married again? Roger thought.
Roger lifted his head again, and when he looked at Atlas, there was a trace of pity in his eyes.
Atlas suddenly looked up, his eyes icy and sharp, the overwhelming psychic force of an upper-tier shifter crashing down like a tidal wave.
Roger, who was used to this kind of pressure, almost bowed. He snapped to attention and quickly projected the message from his optical computer onto a virtual screen floating in the air.
“Your Highness, look. This is from your wife.” Roger’s voice trailed off.
Atlas glanced up and frowned a little when he saw Layla’s message.
Roger genuinely admired Randall as his subordinate. Roger was convinced Randall was destined to become an outstanding commander.
But if Randall ever tried to make a move on Atlas’s wife, well, that bright future of his would go up in smoke.
‘Such a shame,’ Roger thought. ‘Randall really had so much potential.’
Just as Roger was debating whether to risk his neck and say something nice about Randall, Atlas said coolly, “Just tell her the truth.”
“Huh?” Roger blinked, caught off guard.
“What’s wrong?” Atlas asked.
Atlas hadn’t forgotten what went down during his rut; it was obvious Layla was asking about Randall for Annie’s sake.
When Atlas woke up this morning, Layla was already gone. If not for the faint scent of roses still lingering in the bedroom, Atlas might’ve wondered if Layla had ever been there at all.
Atlas couldn’t help but think, ‘Wow, she left in a hurry!
However, his rational mind told him that Layla had made the right choice.
If Layla had stuck around and they’d ended up staring at each other, wide awake and awkward, it would’ve been way too uncomfortable.
Just thinking about how he’d acted all cute and needy with Layla during his rut made Atlas want to slap himself silly.
What really got to Atlas was that he’d actually been kissing Layla and crying at the same time.
Every time his rut ended, Atlas would absolutely loathe the way he’d acted, but at the same time, an overwhelming sense of loss would flood his heart.
Atlas felt restless and irritable.

“I heard void raiders have popped up again in the Xyler System, and now they’re working with the rebels?” Atlas said coolly.
“Your Highness, that’s not confirmed yet,” Roger replied. “We-”
“Then go deal with them,” Atlas cut in.
Roger stared at Atlas, totally frozen. ‘Seriously? Can we just do that?’ he thought.
But Roger could tell Atlas was clearly pissed off, and it was all thanks to Randall.
Roger nodded right away. “Yes, Your Highness. I’ll get the team ready to move out.”
“And answer Layla’s questions truthfully,” Atlas said.
“Yes, Your Highness,” Roger replied.
‘Man, His Highness really has it rough. He acts all icy with his wife, but inside, he’s just hopelessly in love with her. He’s even willing to let her two-time him?’ Roger thought.
Roger gave orders for his crew to refuel the ships and had the stellar rangers stand by, ready to deploy.
Once he finished all that, Roger wrote up a brief, objective summary about Randall, just over two hundred words, and sent it to Layla.
Layla read through it and thought, ‘Yep, this lines up with everything Annie found out.
Plus, part of the reason Randall wanted to call off the engagement was that Annie was a highborn heiress herself.
But just like Annie said, whether they’d actually last together all depended on how they clicked once they really got to know
each other.
Right now, Randall barely knew Annie at all.
Now that Roger had given his objective assessment, it was clear that Randall really was a good catch, definitely worth Annie putting in some effort to win him over.
After a moment’s hesitation, Roger just sent the message off.
