Xavier Sterling didn't take it to heart, nor did he read too much into it; it was just the fragile male ego at play.
"Xavier, say something," Julian Hawthorne pushed him anxiously. "Watch out or she'll make a total fool out of you."
Xavier's gaze shifted, landing on Summer Vance without a ripple of emotion, before casually moving away. His voice was cold and unreadable.
"I don't care."
The sheer indifference in Xavier's expression finally put Lily Sutton's mind at ease.
After all, true apathy was the only explanation for such a nonchalant reaction.
If Xavier were as anxious and fired up as Julian, it would prove Summer still held a place in his heart.
And that would be her worst nightmare.
Julian threw his hands up and leaned back against his chair. "Fine, if you don't care, then I don't care. She can hook up with whoever she wants, as long as she stops bothering you."
Xavier remained silent.
Not long after, the doors to Hunter Sutton's operating room swung open.
Dr. Alistair Grant walked out!
Lily glanced at Summer in the distance.
Seeing Summer looking their way, Lily assumed Summer was eagerly waiting for Dr. Grant to finish so he could operate on her adoptive father.
If that was the case, she couldn't let Summer get what she wanted.
A flash of pure malice crossed Lily's eyes.
She flashed Summer a mocking smile, then quickly rushed forward, asking anxiously, "Professor Grant, was the surgery successful? How is my little Hunter's leg?"
Dr. Grant nodded. "The surgery was a complete success. Please don't worry."
A triumphant smile spread across Lily's face. "Professor Grant, we truly couldn't have done this without you! Thank you so much."
Dr. Grant pulled off his surgical mask, smiling kindly. "You're too kind. It's simply what we doctors do."
But so what?
She wanted to give Summer a glimmer of hope just to crush it, leaving her to drown in agony, anger, and utter helplessness.
She had gone to such great lengths, only to find out she was the biggest joke of all!
Lily was burning with rage, but her emotional mask was flawless. Within seconds, her expression smoothed over completely.
She turned on her heel and strutted right up to Summer.
Being played and openly mocked was a bitter pill Lily refused to swallow.
She was clearly here to cause trouble, looking for payback to regain the upper hand.
Summer knew exactly what she was playing at. She remained seated, leaning back in her chair with an icy calmness. "What do you want? Dr. Grant said the surgery was a success. Do you need me to throw you a parade?"
Lily looked down her nose at Summer, a faint smirk playing on her lips. She lowered her voice. "Summer, I'm just so curious... who exactly did you beg? And when you begged them, did you grovel on the floor like a pathetic dog?"
