Summer scoffed. "Do you think everyone is as despicable, disgusting, and utterly classless as him?"
It was glaringly obvious who Summer was referring to.
Xavier happened to walk over right at that moment and clearly caught the remark. He stood behind Lily, one hand shoved in his pocket, his expression completely unbothered as he threw a cold glance at Summer.
Deep down, a sliver of curiosity tugged at him, too.
Who had Summer gone to for help?
Who had the power to make the hospital dean go back on his word and swap out the real Dr. Grant, risking Xavier's wrath?
Yes, the man who operated on Hunter was also named Dr. Grant, and he was an orthopedic specialist perfectly capable of setting a leg.
But he wasn't the Dr. Grant that Lily had demanded.
Lily smiled sweetly. "Classless? So it was a man who helped you. A man helping a woman out of nowhere... Did you make some shady deals behind Xavier's back? Gave in to some special demands? Otherwise, who would be stupid enough to cross Xavier for you?"
Lily stopped just short of outright accusing her of selling her body in a dirty, illicit transaction.
Or, more accurately, she was implying Summer had slept her way into a favor.
Summer let out a long, meaningful 'Oh.' "What about you? Getting a married man to do all your dirty work... what kind of sleazy, back-alley deals did you have to strike with him?"
"Summer!" Xavier snapped, his eyes flashing a dark warning.
"Are you blind? Can't you see the word 'Disgust' written across my forehead?" Summer's eyes were like ice. "Why are you still hovering around me? Do you genuinely not understand English? If you don't, just bark and I'll download a translation app to help you out."
Summer's insults were merciless. Julian's hands balled into tight fists at his sides. It looked like he was just waiting for Xavier to give the word so he could lunge forward and tear into her.
Xavier's pitch-black eyes locked onto Summer. Remembering that her adoptive parents were still in surgery, he decided to let it slide. "Let's go. We need to check on Hunter," he said coldly.
Julian was furious but let Miles Sutton drag him away.
Lily lagged behind intentionally. She shot Summer a fake, plastic smile and lowered her voice so only the two of them could hear. Her tone was dripping with poison.
"Your adoptive father is old. Even if he miraculously makes it off the table, the post-op complications and infections will kill him anyway. Hang in there, Summer—"
