Substitute Wife, Genius CEO novel Chapter 147

But Fang kept staring at her. With those dimming, heavy eyes, he looked right at her, whimpering and crying pitifully.

It was a plea. A desperate call.

Remembering how happily Fang had circled her just that morning, Summer couldn't hold back any longer. She rushed forward and dropped to her knees beside the wolfdog.

"Fang," Summer called out, her voice trembling.

Fang's eyes lit up for a brief second. He let out a weak whine, the sound quiet but unmistakable in its joy.

He struggled, trying to shift his heavy body, trying to get up, trying to inch just a little closer to Summer so he could press his furry head into her palm.

But he couldn't move. He had no strength left. He was in agony. He was dying...

Oh, his little owner.

Fang didn't live long enough for the vet to arrive.

Lily sobbed so hysterically she looked like she might faint. Then, with a trembling finger, she pointed directly at Summer. "Summer! It was you! You killed Fang! He kept staring at you just now—he was trying to tell us you did this! Wahhh, Xavier, Summer killed my Fang!"

Summer was already overwhelmed with grief, her eyes red.

Part of her was disgusted with herself for mourning Lily's wolfdog.

But another part of her couldn't shake the deep sorrow. It felt as if a piece of her heart had been hollowed out, leaving a lingering melancholy she couldn't brush away.

And right while she was grieving, Lily threw this vicious accusation at her.

Summer wasn't about to take it lying down. She fired back instantly. "You're the one who killed Fang! He was looking at me because he loved me! Why wasn't he looking at you? Are you really his owner? You definitely hated that he was attached to me, so you poisoned him to frame me. You just wanted Xavier to hate me more and pity you!"

Wasn't this just a game of malicious speculation?

If they could baselessly accuse her, she could do exactly the same!

Lily was a piece of trash anyway.

Summer hurled the accusation without a shred of guilt.

It was true what they said: those who lose their minds get to enjoy the world first.

Lily's sobbing seemed to hitch for a fraction of a second. Had Summer actually hit the nail on the head?

Summer's eyes narrowed with suspicion as she stared Lily down. "Your crying rhythm just broke. Getting defensive because I figured you out?"

Lily wept beautifully, looking the picture of a tragic victim. "Summer, how could you be so evil? Fang was my wolfdog!!! Mine!!"

"Even animals protect their own, but apparently you don't. Do you really think you're any better than a beast?"

Summer was practically vibrating with rage. "Xavier! Your own son is the one bleeding!"

Xavier acted as if he hadn't heard a word. He grabbed his phone and personally dialed the police.

Seeing the blood pouring from Leo's forehead, Summer went to pick him up so they could rush to the hospital.

But two bodyguards immediately blocked the front door.

Summer whipped around. Xavier stared at her with ice in his veins. "Leo stays."

"I am taking him to the hospital to treat his wound!"

"The family doctor will be here any minute."

"And when the doctor gets here, who is he going to look at first? Your precious mistress, or Leo?"

Xavier's brow furrowed, but he didn't answer.

Summer let out a hollow laugh, tears shining in her eyes.

Her smile was bright but blindingly painful. It held coldness, mockery, heartache, despair, disgust, and hatred.

The only thing completely absent was love.
